Let’s Make Some Noise and Welcome 2015 with the Loudest Bath Bombs from LUSH!

It’s New Year’s Eve ya’ll and Lush has got some of the brightest, loudest products to help ring in the new year!

Lush Holiday 2014

There is nothing like a brilliant fireworks display that signals a fresh start, but we all can’t afford fanciful pyrotechnics, so why not have a little show in your tub? With the Sparkler*($5.95 CDN) and Northern Lights*($6.95 CDN) and their colourful, crackling, scented explosions of Rose Jam and jasmine and ylang ylang, this duo will light up the night! You can see that Northern Lights even has little stars that pepper your bathwater. Adorable!

Or how about makin’ some actual noise during your NYE party with the reusable Drummers Drumming Bubble Bar*($9.95 CDN) which has actual bells attached to its strawberry-scented bubbly goodness. I don’t have to tell you all that this smells AMAZING.

Of course no celebration is complete with a good, hearty drink that will leave you feeling cozy and satisfied like with one of my Holiday favourites – Hot Toddy Shower Gel*($9.95 CDN) scented with spicy cinnamon and ginger.

Have a SAFE, fun-filled night everyone! I’ll see you next year!

NAIL POLISH | Doctor Lacquer Silent as the Night

I picked up this polish last year, but never got the chance to wear it as is always the case for a nail polish enthusiast. Doctor Lacquer’s Silent as the Night is one of the prettiest, but strangest formulations I have used. First of all, my swatch looks much more translucent or jelly-like than some of the more midnight blue swatches floating around on the web. I am wearing 3 coats below with a TON of glitter fishing. I turned the bottle upside down, shook it around and yet I had to eventually pour out the polish to be able to hand-place the large pink circle and snowflake glitter pieces. BUMMER.

MAKEUP LOOK | Essence “How to Make Nude Eyes” Makeup Box Look, Review and Swatches

When it comes to the holidays, there never seems to be enough time to do anything! It’s a constant rush to get things done and although I usually wear a little bit of makeup to run errands, I’ve been relying on nothing more than moisturizer lately. When I think about the extra time to get “face-ready”, I just shrug my shoulders and say “screw it”. With New Year’s parties just around the corner, I was imagining a 2 hour prep time to get glammed up, but the look I have on today took less than 10 minutes to create!

You can never go wrong with a nude eyeshadow look which is why Essence has kept it simple with the “How to Make Nude Eyes” Makeup Box*($9.99 CDN) with six eyeshadow shades that can take you from day to night in no time flat!

What’s In My Stocking? | Mary Kay Winter Wishes Collection

Let the season of indulgence continue! I never did stockings growing up, but now that I have seen what marvellous things go INTO stockings, I knew this was a tradition that needed to happen ASAP once I moved out on my own. This holiday season, Mary Kay came out with a number of stocking stuffer-friendly options so perhaps you found the limited edition Winter Wishes Shimmeriffic Shower Gel and Body Lotion Set*($27.00CDN) in your stocking or under the tree this year?

DEMETER HOLIDAY COLLECTION | Log Cabin, Fireplace and Christmas Tree (So Realistic, Who Needs the Real Thing?!)

Talk about the perfect time to share some more of Demeter Fragrance Library’s holiday scents! This year’s Holiday Collector’s Edition* ($45.00 USD) centers around the perfect Holiday weekend: a Log Cabin with a Fireplace while gazing at twinkling Christmas Tree.

NAIL ART | Merry Christmas with Red Carpet Manicure Gel Polish in Ruby and Beyond the Nail Decals!

Merry Christmas everyone! Today is either a crazy or relaxing day for most of you so I will leave you with some Christmas cheer in the form of this oogle-licious gel polish from the Red Carpet Manicure Power of the Gem Collection, which is a birthstone-based collection. This is my very first time using RCM and because I don’t use gel nail polish a lot, I made sure to choose colours from the collection that I knew I would love. Ruby has actual ruby powder in its formulation and is meant to represent the month of July or the zodiac symbol Cancer (which is me!).

Red Carpet Manicure Ruby

Red Carpet Manicure Ruby with Beyond the Nail Christmas Decals

A sparkly red polish is not complete this season without some Christmas flair from Beyond the Nail Holiday Collection. These decals are just the CUTEST and are incredibly resilient. Just make sure the snowflake tips are fully flat on the nail or they might get caught on things. I had to re-topcoat a day in to keep them intact. Like most gel polishes, I got 8 days of perfect wear out of this manicure with no chips and the same intense shine. Expect to see more of RCM on this blog in the new year!

Merry Christmas to everyone today!

GIFT IDEA | “Celebrate” the Holidays with Golden Goodies from LUSH!

The holidays and New Year’s are NON-STOP when it comes to being in a celebratory mood. Whether we are celebrating Christmas, time with friends and family or Sephora’s latest sale, the festivities are never-ending and sooner or later the clinking of glasses brings us all closer together. Whatever your alcoholic vice may be (like a classic girl, I love anything fizzy and fruity), Lush has the perfect package for bringing some of those holiday festivities into the tub with the Golden Wonder Gift Set* ($19.95 CDN) which contains: the holiday favourite Celebrate Hand and Body Lotion, Gold FUN and the newest and most AMAZING bath bomb, the Golden Wonder!

NAIL ART | ‘O Christmas Tree, ‘O Christmas Tree!

I have been pumping the Christmas music now that we are in the last week of holiday madness and I don’t know about you guys, but I’m sort of ready for 2015 aren’t you? December is so go, go, go that I cannot wait for the slow lull of January.

I have never done a Christmas tree manicure and when I got my hands on this two coat opacity Green Microglitter from Beyond the Nail, I was like YES. It’s Christmas tree time. After painting my base colour, I used a few different sizes of dotting tool to create the gold garland with Revlon – Gold Coin and the lights and baubles with Sally Hansen XTremeWear– Mellow Yellow, Revlon Gel Envy – Roulette Rush and Revlon Gel Envy – Full House. One coat of top coat and I was done!

LIPS | The Perfect Holiday Red with Guerlain’s Gloss D’Enfer in #920 Rouge Parade

A good lookin’ red never goes out of style whether it’d be a dress, nail polish or lipstick. Looking back, I rarely review lip products on their own because I love being able to put them to the test and show you how they really look on an entire face. There are so many colours I have loved in isolation, but I generally like seeing both a swatch and how it looks on someone overall. With the case of my Guerlain Holiday Look (here), I was so impressed with the Gloss D’Enfer in #920 Rouge Parade* ($33 CDN) that I felt it needed a bit of a spotlight for this holiday season.

DEMETER HOLIDAY COLLECTION| Scent Memory with Candy Cane Truffle Cologne Spray

Demeter Candy Cane Truffle

I haven’t talked about Demeter fragrances in awhile (review) mainly because I bought so much the first time I purchased that I am, unsurprisingly, STILL working through them all!

Demeter has an uncanny ability to capture so much more than scent. Fragrance is all about capturing an emotion, feeling or memory. This month, as our featured brand, the CBB and a few other bloggers from the network aren’t just reviewing Demeter holiday fragrances. We’re sharing a scent memory: partly beauty and partly personal so you can get to know us a little better and truly understand what each fragrance embodies.

The scent of Candy Cane Truffle* is peppermint at first and then chocolate at the end. I don’t know how Demeter was able to do it, but I guess that’s why I am reviewing instead of creating! I was scared that I would smell like toothpaste or a mint, but the “truffle” part truly makes this a wearable scent.

I grew up in a Christian household so Christmas was always celebrated, but being overseas Chinese meant that we had our own take on Christmas traditions. For instance, I’ve always known that there was no Santa so I always knew to go straight to the source (my parents) to let them know what I wanted for Christmas!

Candy Cane Truffle doesn’t take me back to my childhood though. It takes me back to 10 years ago when I was a university student because the presence of candy canes meant the end of December exams! When it came to decorating the tree, it was never done until my exams were over because it was a “job” that I hoarded all to myself! Once my last exam was written, I would go out, purchase a box of fresh candy canes from London Drugs and spend the day decorating the tree in my PJs. Smelling Candy Cane Truffle takes me back to this stress-free period of my life where exams were really the only thing to worry about, my family was still intact and life felt lighter. I’m not saying life isn’t great now, but there were definitely fewer things to worry about then. To this day, I love peppermint-scented ANYTHING because of the comfort of this particular memory.

What is your scent memory?

GIFT IDEA | Your Neighbourhood Nail Addict Will Love the MICRO Nail

I have mentioned before that I am not a fan of filing my nails. I love the process of painting, but any prep work is less than appealing to me. I have tons of those 4-in-1 buffers that guarantee smooth and shiny nails, but do you think I enjoy using them? Not really. I’ll buff my nails if there are some serious ridges, but other than that, I can’t be bothered.

Remember how much I raved about the MICRO Pedi in the summer (review)? Say hello to the MICRO Nail ($59.99 CDN)*, an electric nail polisher that buffs and shines your nails in literally seconds! Each MICRO Nail comes with two patented rollers: the MICRO Smooth and the MICRO Shine rotating 360 degrees and up to 1800 times/minute.

LOOK | Lise Watier Aurora Eyeshadow Palette Blue and Gold Eye Makeup Look, Review and Swatches

Before this post happened, the one and only time I wore a tiara was to my wedding. I have been DYING to wear it again and to be honest, it’s hard to justify wearing one even for a night out because let’s face it. It’s a freakin’ tiara. It suddenly dawned on me that I could actually wear one for a holiday/NYE party because like Halloween, you can practically get away with the beauty equivalent of murder in the form of over-the-top looks and accessories. Lise Watier’s holiday makeup collections are always one of my favourites because there’s always glitz with an everyday element in all of their palettes.

The new Lise Watier Aurora Collection is a prime example of glam and practicality all rolled into one collection of deep purples, blues and hints of gold. I was SUPER impressed by a number of pieces in this collection, but today’s focus will be on the Aurora Palette Eyeshadows* ($43 CDN), composed of 6 ultra-pigmented metallic eyeshadows encased in a dark blue, glittery compact.

NAIL ART | Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

How many sets of Christmas nails can I squeeze in this year? Holiday nail art is SO TOUGH because there are so many cute designs and there is a definite time limit! After the 25th, it’s all about glitter and celebratory NYE nail art which is a whole other type of fun. I have never done reindeer before so after pouring over what felt like dozens of ways to paint reindeer heads, I settled on these goofy looking guys with an appearance by the man himself – RUDOLPH!

BEAUTY BOX | Ipsy September 2014 “Street Style” Edition

Let us forget that it is Christmas for a second and pretend I am just blogging like it’s just any other time of the year. Sometimes I feel like Christmas is that newly engaged friend of yours that won’t stop talking about wedding planning. Just take a break! This is my second to last Ipsy bag and seeing as how I haven’t even opened my October one, it was probably time to stop the subscription! September was all about street style, but I failed to really see a clear theme with the products I received.

Simon & Tom | Soft Peeling Gel (The Peeling Part is Oddly Fun)

Exfoliation. I love it mostly in scrub form, but I can never say no to knowing that dead skin cells are being sloughed away all thanks to my rigorous skincare routine (*pat on the back*). Exfoliating is an incredibly important part of skincare for ALL skin types because it encourages cell turnover and brings forth fresh epithelial cells. It is especially important in the dry winter season when skin starts to look dull and not so hot. For those interested in a different kind of exfoliation, look to Simon & Tom’s Soft Peeling Gel ($49.00 USD)*. For you skincare junkies or for those who just love experimenting, this is a great product to try and I’m gonna tell you why!

Nail Art | Christmas with Snoopy and the OPI Peanuts Collection

I found it a bit odd that the OPI Peanuts Collection was a Halloween release as I certainly do not associate Snoopy and the Peanuts crew with it. Christmas on the other hand? For sure! Watching Charlie Brown is just as necessary as watching “It’s a Wonderful Life” (which I’ve only watched once because it makes me TOO contemplative). I felt a little strange just painting my nails all yellow with OPI – Good Grief!*, so I decided to add a little Snoopy too.

Makeup Look | Get Holiday Glam with Guerlain’s New Petrouchka Palette!

This holiday season, spoil yourself just a little with Guerlain’s Petrouchka Eye and Blush Palette ($95 CDN)* or put it right at the top of your Christmas list at least! Sure this palette screams “holiday” with it’s gold and red packaging, but the eyeshadows and blushes inside are perfectly paired for anytime of the year.

Event | Lush Holiday 2014 and Pacific Centre Opening

Every retailer “does” Christmas, but there is always something about Lush that signals the holidays have arrived. I feel like this goes beyond being a beauty blogger. Some fads are just in my head, but I feel like everyone loves Christmas at Lush and cannot wait for annual favourites like Snow Fairy and Hot Toddy to grace the shelves once more.  A few weeks ago, Lush held their holiday festivities at the newly-opened Pacific Centre location. Things were in full swing by the time I arrived!

Birchbox Comes to Canada! SNEAK PEEK!

It’s here. The time has FINALLY come. Birchbox* has now come to Canada! In what feels like a game of Survivor: Beauty Box Edition, Birchbox has outlasted, outwitted and possibly outsmarted many of its competitors. Monthly subscriptions are $10/month (plus $4.95 for shipping) or save two months by signing up for the year at $100 (plus shipping). To ensure that your Birchbox suits you best, make sure to fill out your beauty profile so that your straight hair isn’t subject to products that restore curl (true story…).

When I first entered the beauty box subscription ring 3 years ago, oh how I fantasized about getting a Birchbox. With its variety of makeup brands and rarely a sample packet, subscribers have seemed consistently happy with the service and boxes. More importantly for me, Birchbox has been running for 4 years which is a record after having gone through shutdowns from other beauty box companies. I’ve yammered on for long enough and I’m sure most of you have already scrolled to the bottom to see what was inside, but let’s go through the unboxing anyway shall we?

MAKE UP FOR EVER | Artist Shadows in M-106, ME-910 & S-234 Swatches and Makeup Look

In celebration of MAKE UP FOR EVER’s 30th anniversary this year, MUFE released the new Artist Shadow range with a whopping 210 shades consisting of matte, satin, metal, iridescent and diamond finishes. I tried to pick out some “neutrals” and I think I was staring at the display for 45 minutes. Each shadow can either be purchased as a single ($25 CDN), duo ($39 CDN) or trio ($50 CDN). I hope I don’t end up owing even close to all 210 shades, but with the wide variety of shades and finishes the temptation can be overwhelming!

HASK | Macadamia Oil Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner + GIVEAWAY!

My mission this season has been about hydration whether it’d be skin or hair.  Now that I have coloured hair, I am completely OBSESSED with making sure my hair feels healthy. Back in October, I raved about the HASK Macadamia Oil hair treatments (review) and still religiously use the oil on the ends of my hair to keep them shiny and hydrated. When it comes to hair care though, I feel like treatments are like the “extended family” and the only way to know the heart of a line is by their shampoos and conditioners.

HASK Macadamia Oil Shampoo and Conditioner

As I have mentioned previously, all of HASK’s products are free of sulfates, parabens, phthalates, gluten, alcohols and artificial colours which means that both the Macadamia Oil Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner* ($5.99) are perfectly safe for colour-treated hair. The scent of course, is of yummy vanilla nut and has certainly made my hair look and feel less brittle. I found that also using the hair mask was what really made a difference at least at the beginning. I don’t really understand hair, but the hair mask seemed to set me up for the week with the shampoo and conditioner more or less maintaining my hair’s softness.

One thing this duo does not do is volumize so if you have fine hair, I’d probably use a different HASK line as all of them are hydrating, with the Macadamia Oil line being for very dry hair. It certainly didn’t weigh down my hair and because I add volume using texturizing dry shampoos I wasn’t too fussed. This is such an affordable little duo and to be perfectly honest, works just as well if not better than certain more expensive salon brands I have tried. In addition to macadamia oil, there is also coconut and jojoba oil in the shampoo and the addition of shea butter in the conditioner less than halfway through the ingredients list.

Final Verdict: For me, the wow factor really comes from experiencing all 4 products in the Macadamia Oil line. They all really compliment each other and enhance each other’s efficacy.

So, of course it’s Friday and we are one week into December so why not have a giveaway seeing as how “giving” is what this season is all about?

Mary Kay Little Gifts Holiday Scents | Hand Cream and Lip Balm Set

I know that some of you may have seen the Mary Kay Little Gifts Hand Creams ($13 CDN) in Vanilla Berry* and Vanilla Mint* back in the summer, but I was NOT ready to talk about holiday scents until at least Daylight Savings. I mean, come on! That being said, it is now officially the beginning of December and I finally feel like it’s acceptable to use holiday-scented products. For you Satin Hands fans, these two hand creams are identical in formula with the only difference being scent. Why reformulate something that already works, right?

Mary Kay Little Gifts Hand Cream in Vanilla Mint and Vanilla Berry

My favourite of these two scents is definitely the Vanilla Mint! I tend to favour mint because it just smells so refreshing, but that’s not to say the Vanilla Berry isn’t good. Vanilla Berry is lightly berry-scented so you can still pick up the hints of vanilla.

Holiday Gifts for Mom from Calgon and Yardley London

I constantly get my mom bath products for any occasion. She doesn’t wear a lot of makeup, wears minimal jewellery (other than wedding rings) and is fairly LESS beauty product crazy than her daughter. Bath products can be slightly frivolous, but are always items people can use which is probably why I keep buying them for her. I know I can’t go wrong!

I have always found it incredibly convenient to have hand lotion right next to hand soap because I never remember to moisturize my hands again after washing them. I go pee like every hour at home so I rarely remember to do it and just go about my day with dry hands (sorry, was that TMI?). I have reviewed the Calgon Hawaiian Ginger scent before (review) and I have to say that I prefer it MUCH more in the Calgon Hand Duo*.

Calgon Hawaiian Ginger Hand Soap and Lotion Duo (2)

Empties | November 2014

November 2014 Empties

1. bliss | Super-Sized Body Butter in Lemon + Sage (414mL)Thumbs up

I picked this up back in 2012 with some other bliss items from Winners and it is only now that I have finally finished this bad boy. I tend to hoard bliss stuff like it’s going out of style because I love ALL THE SCENTS especially Lemon + Sage and Blood Orange + Black Pepper. I don’t know where I’m going to find another big guy like this, but I used EVERY LAST DROP.

2. Soap & Glory | Sugar Crush Body Scrub (300mL)Thumbs up

This scrub smells like a juicy mojito! It contains sweet lime and brown sugar and is that tough, gritty scrub that I prefer when it comes to body exfoliation.

3. The Body Shop | Wild Argan Oil Rough Scrub (200mL)*Thumbs up

Oooh, another body scrub I really liked! The whole Wild Argan Oil collection has really been a winner for most of us and the scrub is one of my favourites as it is one with a great grit and of course that amazing scent!

4. AG Hair Cosmetics | Firewall Argan Flat Iron Spray (5oz)Thumbs up

This is a great spray for flat ironing or just heat protection in general. It tames frizz and flyaways and keeps the flat iron moving. There is even a caution on this that says “May cause floors to become slippery”! It’s super light and for a spray, doesn’t leave hair feeling wet to the touch. I’ve been using one by CHI lately and it just isn’t quite the same as this one…

5. Yes to Grapefruit| Brightening Facial Wipes (25 Exfoliating Wipes)Thumbs up

One of my favourites wipes to date and I go through about a pack every month! These wipes actually use certified organic grapefruit peel extract and is third on the ingredient list. I felt a VERY slight tingle when using these which is a good thing as these wipes are supposed to act as a very gentle chemical exfoliant and more importantly, my face felt cleansed without over drying.

6. Jean Pierre Cosmetics | Exfoliating Facial Cleansing Pads with Microbeads (16 Pads)Thumbs down

I did not like these. The little beads were a little too rough and even though it says these can remove mascara, I felt like I was scratching away my skin. I also didn’t feel like my skin was very clean after using these even though I could visibly SEE that there was makeup and dirt coming off.

7. mG | Dynamic Hydrating Eye Mask (1 piece)Thinking smile

I have mixed feelings about eye masks because they seem very expensive for a one-time use. I would much rather invest in an eye cream. The only type of eye masks I like are the de-puffing or anti-stress ones where you need a quick pick-me up right away.

8. Glamglow | Youthmud Tingle Exfoliate Treatment (15g)Thinking smile

I have a feeling this is not the right kind of Glamglow mask for me because I didn’t really see that much of a glow to my skin. It is a clay mask which can feel quite drying to dry skin which also may be why I felt uncomfortable using this. There are three other masks by Glamglow so I’ll give those a try as they each address different skin concerns.

9. Jergens | Ultra Care Moisturizer (7mL)Thinking smile

This was a good moisturizer, very thick and non-greasy, but it isn’t any better than what I use now. When it comes to moisturizer, I love a great scent and this didn’t really have any.

10. MAKE UP FOR EVER | Pro Finish in 120 (10g)*Thumbs up

This was the first foundation that transformed me (review). I didn’t think I’d find a foundation until this one and have been using it steadily for the past year. I already have a backup that I bought last year when I started to see pan, but because I’ve been using BB cream a lot more my usage slowed down quite a bit. Nevertheless, this one is a KEEPER!

11. Escents Aromatherapy | Organic Lavender and Orange Essential Oil (5mL)Thumbs up

I love using my diffuser and I’ve used up this particular scent because it has come to my attention that my cat Yoshi has been a little stressed out when we’re not in the house. According to my vet, lavender tends to soothe cats so I program the diffuser to puff out lavender-scented air for him while he sleeps. Soothes me too so it must work!

12. First Aid Beauty | Face Cleanser (2mL)Thinking smile

I used this sample on my Clarisonic and didn’t really get a feel of the texture or efficacy of this highly rated product at all. Luckily, I have a full-sized one from a FAB kit that I got from Sephora!

13. Burt’s Bees | Beeswax Lip Balm in PeppermintThumbs up

I love this stuff. I’ve been using it since I was a teenager and it’s the first thing that goes on my lips after a shower. I love the mintiness. It’s almost like an addition to those Vicks inhalers…

Look at that! 96 more empties to be EVEN to last year…

The Body Shop Color Crush Nail Polish | Polka Dot French Manicure

The Body Shop Color Crush Nail Polishes ($8.00 CDN) have surprised me. I honestly did not think I would love and appreciate the formula and colours so much. Yes, they are all crèmes (for now…), but with every manicure I do, I fall deeper in love with them. Every time I wear them, someone always asks if it’s a gel polish because they are so shinyyyyy.

Today’s manicure was created with two (could have gotten away with one) coats of The Body Shop – Relish the Moment* and  The Body Shop – Frosting Fancy* using two different sized dotting tips to create the French tips.

GIVEAWAY (Open Internationally) | Mont Bleu Glass Nail Files with BLING!

Mont Bleu Glass Nail Files

You all know that I LOVE doing my nails. In fact, the day I get too old to do them will be a sad day for me. I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned this, but I NEVER cut my nails with a nail clipper. I ONLY use a glass file so now that I’ve tried everything from what’s available at the drugstore to even Julep, I can honestly say that I ONLY use my Mont Bleu glass nail file (review). The Czech-tempered glass is both smooth to the touch, yet files my nails like a BOSS. It stays sharp all the time and it is actually guaranteed for life.

I refuse to use anything else which is why I am pleased to announce that Mont Bleu is generously giving one lucky Cosmetic Proof reader a set of 3 glass files with Swarovski elements. The winner will be able to choose from either the black design above or from the following three designs:

Mary Kay | Midnight Jewels Emerald Noir Palette Makeup Look with Swatches!

Although Vancouver just had its first snowfall of the year, I feel like Fall makeup collections are going to be a predominant part of my life until I bring out the glitter for holiday parties and whatnot and then put it all away again in January. Back in August, I shared with you all the Mary Kay Sapphire Noir Palette (review) and was absolutely in love with it. Now it’s time for the Emerald Noir Palette ($26 CDN), which might be more wearable on a day to day basis thanks to its earthy tones.
