SKINCARE | Eco-Certified and 100% Naturally-Derived with Schaf Skincare #PracticeSafeSkincare

This year I am saying "YES" to good skincare. For the past year, I have been making a conscious effort to limit "random" skincare on my face and keep it as efficient as possible while keeping it interesting since I do appreciate the technology that goes into developing a good skincare product. I especially pay attention to Canadian skincare companies and even more so ones that have Eco-certified products (more about Ecocert here)!

Schaf Skincare is based in Toronto, Ontario and is all about using a unique blend of plant extracts to nurture and protect the skin. Intended for use by ALL skin types, Schaf products are individually eco-certified which is the ULTIMATE stamp of natural approval. Ecocert originated in France and is an independent body that meticulously researches the origins of every ingredient. They visit the facilities where products are made and ensure that ingredients and the steps taken to product the products are indeed "all-natural". You can imagine how much this must cost in terms of time and money so for a cosmetics company to submit themselves to such an audit is what set Schaf apart from a number of other companies in my mind. It is also interesting to note that it is NOT companies that are Ecocertified, but individual products so you might see some companies certifying only certain products in their product lines if there are 100 products.

Now that we have established what having an Ecocert product means, all Schaf products are MADE WITHOUT:  Parabens, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Artificial Colors, Sulfates, Mineral Oil, Silicone, Phthalates, Petroleum, Animal Byproducts, GMOs, Gluten, Propylene Glycol. As they are a relatively new company, there are currently five products in the Schaf product line, three of which I will share with you today!

The White Lava Purifying Scrub* (120mL/$30.00 CDN) is for all skin types and uses white lava powder and perfectly round apricot seed powder as physical exfoliators. I think the drugstore St.Ives apricot scrub has ruined us when we think of apricot seeds because of how harsh it is on the skin! Apricot seed powder on its own is gentle enough to even be used with cleansing devices because of how polished and round they are. The texture of this scrub is of medium density with the exfoliators sitting in a cream-like base that acts as a cleanser. Using this 2-3x per week worked best for my skin as it was a bit too rough for daily use, but believe me, your skin will feel so dreamy after rinsing!

My only qualm with this scrub was the packaging it was in as it was hard to squeeze out the product. I would have preferred a pump (should the texture allow it) as my bottle looks pretty destroyed with "squeeze marks" now!

Though the Nutritive Daily Moisturizer* (50mL/$45.00 CDN) has a number of nourishing oils in its ingredients list, it is far from feeling oily on the skin. With peptides and hyaluronic acid again in the very beginning of the ingredients list, this moisturizer may LOOK unassuming, but sure packs a punch when it comes to ingredient goodness!

Both the hubs and I loved the pump for this with a half pump being enough for the entire face. It
melted easily into the skin and left it ready enough for makeup application in the mornings and hydrated enough to go to bed. As there is no night cream (yet) in the Schaf skincare line, I am used to hamming it up and having my skin be a glistening ball of oils and treatments at night. While I wasn't my usual oily self, using this moisturizer alone did not leave my skin feeling deprived. In fact, I liked knowing that I was getting "anti-aging" benefits with a formulation that felt lighter in texture.

Ingredients: Deionized Water, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Leaf) Gel*, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride**, Vitis Vinifera (Grape/Raisin) Seed Oil, Palmitoyl Oligopeptide (and/et) Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-3, Sodium Hyaluronate, Persea Gratissima (Avocado/Avocat) Oil*, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower/Tournesol) Seed Oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut/Noix de Coco) Oil*, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba/Tournesol) Seed Oil*, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter/Beurre de Karité)*, Cucurbita Pepo (Pumpkin/Citrouille) Seed Oil*, Polyglyceryl-3 Stearate**, Palm Stearic Acid, Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate**, Propanediol (Zemea)**, Cetearyl Alcohol, Glycerine (Vegetable/Légumes), Mixed Tocopherols (Vitamin E), , Sambucus Nigra (Elder) Flower*, Malva Sylvestris (Mallow) Extract*, Symphytum Officinale (Comfrey/Consoude) Extract*, Xanthan Gum, Glyceryl Caprylate, Sodium Levulinate**, Allantoin

The Eye Cream* (15mL/$40.00 CDN) has a slightly thicker texture than most eye creams and can be applied all around the orbital bone.  As you massage the cream in, the texture softens and leaves the undereye area feeling not just hydrated, but soft and pliable. This is a non-sticky eye cream (YES!) and can be used for both day and night. Why WOULDN'T you want to use it all the time with ingredients like: hyaluronic acid (#3 in the list!), squalane (naturally found in our bodies and keeps skin plump while also being a serious antioxidant) and CoQ10 (ubiquinone) another amazing antioxidant naturally found in the human body. Both squalane and ubiquinone diminish with age and not only reduce free radical damage, but have been found to help cells in building collagen and elastin (January 2016, Truth in Aging) which none of us should say no to!

Initially, I was concerned that the richness of the eye cream would cause milia in my undereyes, but not the case! My skin looked so happy and bouncy though my dark circles could not be alleviated. I am convinced that no eye cream can really take them away.
