MAKEUP | Make Up For Ever Artist Acrylip Review with Lip Swatches in #201, #401 and #501

Make Up For Ever has released so many new and/or improved products over the last year that I feel like I will forever be talking about them! Though the Artist Shadows are still my favourite launch (I mean, I have not come across a shade I did not like and that didn't feel like butter), lipsticks have also been a massive launch this past year. Though I will be getting to the Artist Rouge lippies soon enough, I could not resist trying out the new Artist Acrylip Lip Paints* ($29.00 CDN) because I've always been a sucker for a good gloss and a cute tube!

Coming in 10 buildable shades, the Artist Acrylip Lip Paints were inspired by the richness of acrylic paint. I use acrylic paints in my nail art designs quite a bit so I definitely attest to their buildability and intense colour! Like paint, application instructions speak of "drops" where one drop to the center of the bottom lip provides soft colour and shine while 3-4 drops gives more vibrant colour.

I chose the shades #201, #401 and #501, but after seeing swatches of the other colours I think I want a more neutral shade for everyday.

Most of MUFE's products are relatively consistent within each category, but even with just the three Acrylips I have there are vast differences in application and consistency. Though I normally have no problems with using a sponge applicator, there is something surprisingly difficult about applying a dark lip colour with one. I ended up having to use a lip brush to provide clean edges.

201, a bright hot pink, may have been the loudest colour, but it was actually the one with the best consistency. It was pigmented and applied smoothly without any patchiness. It was also the only Acrylip that I could apply without a lip brush.

401, a raspberry red, was a bit more fluid in consistency which without lip liner gave me bleeding edges. The colour is really beautiful though and seems to be the perfect red on even someone with green hair.

501 was my Everest out of the three shades. I could not get this shade to apply evenly with the sponge applicator and so I was forced to use my lip brush. Colour payoff was patchy and the high gloss finish seemed to amplify the places where the colour was not even. The colour itself is wonderfully vampy and dramatic so I am torn over whether to hang on to 501 or not.

Final verdict: I like the idea of being able to mix all of the Acrylip shades to create a custom colour but I wish the formulas of each of the colours were more consistent especially for the darker shades. A darker shade is already a bit more of a challenge so ideally I would want this consistency to be easy to apply! The wear time when wearing 3-4 drops is sort of your classic 2-4 hours, but what's nice is that there is a bit of a stain that is left behind so your lips will at least have a hint of tint once the glossy goodness is gone.
