I know matte lipsticks aren't everyone's cup of tea and it took me a long time to get onboard, but now I am there and I will wear anything from nude to bright red to purple so let's say hello to the new Avon Soft Matte Liquid Lips! These lipsticks come in 8 pigmented shades that feel weightless and featherlight and contain poppy seed oil and vitamin E for comfort. This non-drying formula is supposed to last for hours on end while still looking fabulous until the very end of the day so let's see how they performed!
PR samples
I received 4 shades which were all TOTALLY shades I would have chosen on my own! As you can see from the swatches below, pigmentation is not an issue and though Driven looks a bit patchy, it really wasn't once I applied this shade onto my lips. None of the shades required me dipping back in for more product so the combination of the pigment going a long way and the amount of product on the applicator was a winner.
The doe foot applicator was a little different than most as it had a little curved bit that hugged the lips for more accurate application. Matte liquid lipsticks need TOTAL focus during application and anything that will help me stay on the straight and narrow is welcome! If I don't focus, I always mess up on creating the rounded edge on my lower lips and then I have to go in with concealer which I hate doing. I like doing it slowly, but it one step.
Resolute*
This was one of my favourite shades as I love a purple/mauve shade that can be worn casually like a nude. I wore this on the first day of the #LDBeauty Event as I wanted a lip colour that lasted through the event and dinner. I am definitely keeping this shade in my "everyday mattes" collection!
Devoted*
Devoted comes out a little on the coral/pink side and was also another lovely shade that just made me feel ultra feminine and soft.
Ambitious*
I love nude matte lipsticks, but for my skintone I have to make sure they have a touch of pink in them as I hate nudes that are the same colour as my skin tone. I'm not into the blank canvas look and this nude has a touch of peach in it that also puts it in my "everyday mattes" collection.
Driven*
Ah, this is the wild shade. I adore colours like this, but I just feel like a crazy person wearing them and I hate how much more yellow it makes my teeth look. It is a great shade though and a lot of fun to wear, but certainly not an everyday shade for me. This shade also stains so my arm still has remnants of where I swatched 2 days ago and my lips as well. It's nothing a little foundation can't handle, but just an FYI!
Final verdict: These lipsticks did everything they said they would in terms of pigmentation and being long-lasting. They also didn't budge on colour when I was eating or drinking which was nice as some mattes do transfer, BUT this is a quality that can make matte liquid lipsticks more comfortable to wear. These lipsticks are not the most comfortable and when I wore Resolute to Whistler that day for #LDBeauty, I was keenly aware of my lips and they did feel a little tight and dry despite the formula being very light. As I have become more used to matte lipsticks, I have also become more forgiving when it comes to that characteristic dryness that comes with matte lipstick territory, but I have to say that these ones from Avon might not be for everyone especially if you are not a fan of that dry feeling, but this is probably what makes them last the whole day!
