Summer is officially here as is sunscreen season, though it is technically ALWAYS sunscreen season, there is something about experiencing actual heat that really puts you in the mood! One area that I often neglect to apply sunscreen to is my lips and though I have never been been burned on my lips, whenever I go out on walks, I try to cover them up with something as much as possible because a lip sunburn just sounds painful! Thankfully, Burt's Bees has a new tinted lip balm (yay!) that also has an SPF 30 (double yay!) and are a mineral sunscreen formulated with 19.5% zinc oxide. I have never used a tinted lip SPF product before and I thought it was cool that I would be able to look a little more dressed up yet still being protected from UV!
Coming in two shades, the Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balms promise to protect, nourish and add a splash of colour to your lips with a nano-free zinc oxide formula. This is a mineral sunscreen for the lips that also uses beeswax and shea butter to hydrate and seal in moisture. Each tube is also made with 31% plant-based materials!
The two shades are wildly pigmented and while they look smooth on my arm, because they are a mineral sunscreen, they do feel pretty thick and I don't think they apply as smoothly as the description says they should. In my mind, when I first applied them I immediately thought "She thick!"
There is also a very strong somewhat chalky cherry-like scent which I am not a huge fan of, but I also understand that what I am probably smelling is the ingredients list without any added fragrance.
While the shade "Wild Peony" is meant to be a rosy hint of pink, I find it too pink/grey for my skin. I was not expecting these to be quite as pigmented as they are and on the one hand, it's good to know that these lip tints can deliver similar levels of pigmentation to lipsticks!
The shade "Sienna Rose" looks better on my skin tone, but I have to be a little more careful when applying as it is REALLY obvious if you go outside of your lip lines! What I have found the easiest is to more or less, *dab dab* this shade on my lips and then I get a hint of colour that matches me better.
Final verdict: Yes, I said there was a strong scent and a thickness to the application of these lip balms, but I look at these more as necessary protective sunscreen with a bonus of having the tint so I am able to live with these issues. I just hope that there are different shades in the future that will fall somewhere in between these two shades that might be a little more friendly to a wider range of skin tones.
You can find the Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balms with SPF 30 at any local drugstore.
