HAIR | JVN Undamage Collection and Instant Recovery Serum

It's heeeerre! I love the show Queer Eye and don't think I've made it through a single episode without crying so when I heard that hair and grooming expert Jonathan Van Ness was coming out with a namesake haircare line, I had a feeling that it was going to be special! Made with the natural silicone alternative hemisqualane, this ingredient is fast-absorbing and non-greasy and is an amazing hydrator with high spreadability thanks to its low molecular weight. This lightweight property also makes hemisqualane a great way to reduce frizz!

With a launch of 10 products at what I would consider fairly affordable pricing for a high end hair care line, all JVN products, in addition to containing hemisqualane, are vegan, silicone-free, sulfate-free, colour-safe and made with a post-consumer recycled pump and recyclable aluminum bottle. I was trying to think of the best way to review all of the products and because I generally like to be thorough, I have decided to split the reviews up into combinations of products that work together with the first being the healing trio of the Undamage Strengthening Shampoo and Conditioner and the Complete Instant Recovery Serum.

Immediately, what I liked about all the JVN products were the scents and how subtle they were despite each product having a very distinctive profile. The Undamage Strengthening Shampoo and Conditioner are scented with bergamot, summer fruits, warm woods, amber and cashmere musk. Definitely woodsy, but the citrus shines through as well. So many hair products often have incredibly overwhelming floral scents, but I feel like this scent had a bit more thought put into it, almost like it was going to be a wearable fragrance.

Undamage Strengthening Shampoo*

I started off with the Undamage duo because of my colour-treated hair. It has been through a lot and I started using these products right when I got my hair coloured at the beginning of October. The shampoo is a gently cleansing pearlescent gel that lathers up well. This is meant to be a reparative shampoo that also uses ceramides to repair split ends and jojoba esters to mimic hair lipids and fill in cracks in the hair cuticle for overall stronger hair. I agree that my hair felt clean after rinsing and have also been letting this duo show their true colours by letting my hair air dry the last month or so.

Undamage Strengthening Conditioner*

Conditioners are sort of the judgment call for me when it comes to haircare since it is the final step and I will say that initially, I wasn't too impressed by how my hair felt after rinsing the first few times because I was very aware of my hair texture. I was just too used to having it feel smooth from conditioners with silicones, but after about 2 weeks, I noticed that my hair maintained the healthy salon feeling. I have been flat iron curling it as well, but my hair actually doesn't curl as easily now because it is healthy again. I know that the haircut contributes to this feeling, but the fact that my hair started feeling and looking significantly better after a few uses of this duo makes me believe the hemisqualane is doing its job! The other ingredient I like in this conditioner is the addition of hydrolyzed quinoa which is known to aid in colour retention which I desperately want!

Instant Recovery Serum*

Firstly, I adore the scent of this! This is a blend of amber, cashmere musk and a citrus splash of lemon and mandarin. This is an incredibly lightweight cream that I apply from root to tip either before blow-drying (the few times that I have in the last couple of weeks) to protect against heat damage. I have mainly been using it as an overnight treatment in preparation for flat iron use the next morning. I am normally not a fan of cream products in damp hair because I just don't like the sensation of coming it through with my hands, but I make an exception for this because even as my hair dries, I feel like my hair gets softer as time goes by and it's all without silicones which is incredible! I would recommend this just as a great leave-in hair treatment!

Final verdict: The packaging, price, scents and results have all been impressive so far so these three products get a huge thumbs up from me! I am looking forward to trying out the other products as well and hope some of you got a chance to try a few things through the Sephora VIB sale!
