That's right. PLANTABLE makeup - it actually exists! While I had heard of plantable writing pencils before, plantable makeup liners were something that had not crossed my inbox until this summer! Founded in 2013 by Michael Stausholm, Sprout was the first plantable writing pencil which was a sustainable way of giving a second life to otherwise a very short and unusable pencil!

The Sprout eye and browliners launched in November 2021 and like their writing pencil siblings, are made of certified wood sourced from responsibly managed forests, graphite, clay with a vegan liner formula containing plant-based waxes and oils.

The caps are made of sugar cane with the ends of each pencils made of soluble cellulose caps that dissolve in soil containing bee-friendly flower seeds. How cool is that?!

Currently, the Sprout makeup line contains a black/brown eyeliner and a universal shade browliner. What peaked my interest when this brand showed up in my inbox was the fact that over the last year or so, I have noticed that my eyes have been sensitive to all of my eyeliners especially around the waterline. I used to think that my eyes felt "tight" because I was tired, but I noticed one day that on my days off when I didn't wear eyeliner, my eyes felt fine. Then, I did a makeup look an hour later and my eyes felt "tight" again so after a bit more trial and error, I realized it was indeed all my of my beloved Urban Decay, Shu Uemura and MUFE eyeliners that were causing my eyes to feel this way. It wasn't unbearable, but was definitely something I was noticing more and more.

While the black eyeliner wasn't as creamy or pigmented as the gel liners I am used to, I was able to smoothly line my waterline without ANY irritation! I feel like my eyes look sleepy without a touch of lower lash liner and this eyeliner did the trick to give my eyes some definition even if it wasn't the blackest of blacks. As for using this on the upper lash line, it was barely visible if I had eyeshadow on so this is when I would still stick with liquid liner which seemingly did not make my eyes feel uncomfortable. This pencil is not long-wearing and did wear off my waterline after a few hours.

The browliner is one of those universal shades of brown (shown as a line and smudged out) and is my favourite of the two products as it is practically foolproof in application. I found the pencil to be slightly soft and waxy and one that gives my brows a soft, almost filtered look. If you are looking for a pencil that gives fine, hair-like strokes, this is not the pencil for you. My brows lasted all work day so I have no complaints here! I only wish there was a spoule, but I also understand that having this on the end would no longer make the pencil plantable.

Final verdict: If you are a more casual makeup wearer, you will probably be happy with both of these products, but if you are more makeup savvy, the performance will have you wanting especially the eyeliner. Don't get me wrong, the prices are great ($12.99 for the browliner and $28.99 for the brow and eyeliner duo) I LOVE the concept of a plantable makeup product and the details that have gone into this product are truly admirable, but for a makeup product to compete in the beauty space, the performance needs to measure up to other products in the same category so I think Sprout still has a way to go. This is an amazing start though and I look forward to seeing the makeup collection expand!

For now, only the writing pencils are available in Canada with the makeup pencils only available in the EU. Hopefully they become available to North America soon!
