A couple of weeks ago I shared a preview of a "something special" from La Prairie and now that the La Prairie Skin Caviar Essence-In Foundation* has launched I can now officially share the lowdown on this foundation infused with caviar water which promises a perfect complexion by leaving skin with a refined texture that is smooth to the touch while giving the skin a natural-looking finish. The very first thing I looked at was WHERE this caviar water sat on the ingredients list and low and behold, it was the very first thing!

I have not had the pleasure of trying La Prairie's Skin Caviar line in full, but from the many tabs I currently have open trying to figure out what the deal is with caviar water, the Skin Caviar line is all about lifting and firming while providing improved skin texture and protection from free radicals.
Caviar is full of water, proteins, lipids, minerals, vitamins and fatty and amino acids which means boatloads of hydration for the skin! La Prairie uses caviar water or caviar "extract" in their Skin Caviar formulations which have shown promising results at least with regards to hydration and protective mechanisms when applied topically. If I ever get the chance to do a skincare review, we can get into more detail about caviar extract, but for now I have classified this more of a makeup review so let's get to how this foundation looked on the skin!
I received the shade NC-10 Porcelaine Blush* which is probably closer to my winter shade, but now that my hair is dark again, it actually makes me look like a sexy Morticia Adams. Included is an additional 15ml full size refill which is always nice and helps to rationalize pricing as well if you are waffling on whether to spend on a more extravagant purchase like this one. It also has an SPF of 25 PA+++, but I do not believe it is on the packaging in Canada as the sunscreen ingredients have not been given a DIN yet. There is ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate at the beginning of the ingredients list which made me do a bit more research as this is a chemical sunscreen against UVB rays.
The plastic packaging is quite large with the compact being larger than my palm and has a high shine silver finish on top that as much as I think looks super sleek, gets fingerprints and mucky looking very easily on the surface so I'm always wiping it down.
Like most cushion foundations, there is a mirror and antibacterial sponge inside, but what I have not experienced before is their actual cushion system. Unlike other cushions I have used before, there is no plastic cover separating the sponge from the cushion. Here, the application sponge sits right on top of the cushion.
This cushion has a very firm bounce so I do find that I have to press a little harder to get product out than previous cushions I have used.
The foundation has that characteristic La Prairie scent I love so much and is a light to medium coverage which is perfect for me. It blends well and feels completely weightless on the skin which is always the sign of a good cushion foundation!

You can see how much brighter and even toned my skin looks once I have this foundation on and it actually wore BETTER as the day progressed! Medium coverage is ideal for me and even when I went in with a second layer, the formula didn't get more cakey or heavy feeling. Some parts of my skin looked smoother for sure, but I still struggled with a bit of flaking and unevenness around my nose. I'm still not sure whether it was my skin or the foundation. I was actually most impressed with the longevity of this foundation because I put it to the test for a full day of work and it did not budge nor was I the slightest bit greasy in my T-zone. The formula seemed to keep oil at bay which made me feel confident in using this again on a long day.

Final verdict: I have my moods when it comes to foundation and though I like cushions in general, I would not use them exclusively as I tend to use them for when I'm feeling lazy or want a simple low key makeup look. Some days I just prefer using a Beauty Blender instead of a cushion applicator and/or a foundation with a medium to full coverage. What IS great about this foundation is that it took next to no time to go from zero to hero and look like I was lit from within with an angelic luminosity only given by God. I am tempted to give this a go in my current Summer shade, but I can still make this shade work once I apply bronzer and the rest of my makeup.
