I’m not normally one to buy mascara considering the number of mascara samples I’ve been getting, but the new Maybelline Mega Plush Mascara really caught my eye because it uses a gel-mousse formula leading to less “crunchy” and brittle lashes. This lighter formula also promises massive and supple volume as it contains 40% less hard waxes and uses a new Flexor Brush. To be honest, these flexible brushes scare me…I feel like I have no control when I’m applying mascara! I’m like a woman gone wild!
As you can see, I didn’t really get a lot of “mega volume”, but I did get some lash lengthening. I have to admit that I was a little disappointed with how little this mascara plumped up my lashes, but the gel-mousse formula definitely left my lashes feeling not quite so brittle. There were moments in my day when I forgot I was even wearing mascara! The other positive about this mascara was that it was really easy to remove with just water. The packaging says to use soap and water, but I’m too scared to have soap anywhere near my eyes because I dread the stinging sensation!
The Flexor Brush is not my favourite as I do feel like the extra “gumbiness” of the mascara wand makes me feel like I have less control. I like being able to push a little to really get the brush in between what few lashes I have, but with the Flexor Brush, pushing just caused the brush to bend and not really get into the lash crevices. One thing I did notice was that the length of the wand is quite short in order to compensate for the “gumby” brush so at least the physics involved are correct!
Final Verdict: Do I suggest that you run out now and snap up this mascara? Probably not. After this experience, I definitely prefer stiff mascara brushes much more to flexible ones. The concept was interesting, but it just didn’t work for me. I did like the formula though, so MAYBE I could substitute a stiff brush with this formula? My lashes didn’t feel quite so heavy so the gel-mousse formula definitely lived up to its promises in that respect, but I didn’t get the volume that was promised which is a huge factor in why most of us buy mascaras anyway. I don’t really care too much for lengthening if my lashes look sparse. As much as I hate to say I don’t like something, I’m going to have to say NO to re-purchasing this mascara
Thanks for the review Jayne:) I feel like I'm enticed by every single add but there are loads of "misses" these days. I'm using Illegal Length (Maybelline) right now and it's quite nice. I am on the look out for another drug store mascara as this one is almost done. Have a fab weekend

Thanks Sabina! I took a risk buying this mascara and although I don't regret it, I wish it did what it promised...hope you had a good weekend too!
Deleteoh bummer! but i do like that it isn't scrunchy feeling, maybe you can use this one for the office for a more natural look
ReplyDeleteThat's what I was thinking. Just using it for a casual day out.
DeleteGreat Review!
ReplyDeleteI didn't think that this mascara was going to be good.
The gel-mousse formula kinda scares me! haha

LOL, with me being scared of the flexible brush we'd make an interesting duo!
DeleteGreat review Jayne. Have you tried the mascara brushes that shape like a little ball?

I have! I find that it takes too long to just use the ball. I end up using a regular mascara wand and then using the ball just for the far ends of my lashes. The ball really adds quite a lot of height to lashes though!
DeleteI think the idea of this is unique with the gel-mouuse formula, however you're right about the lengthening. I prefer volume with mascara too, and though a mascara might feel softer, I think you could get the same result by just using less of another mascara. :(
ReplyDeleteToo bad this didn't fulfill every promise, I'd like to know if it works better for you with a different brush!
Great review. (:
Thanks Christa! The gel-mousse formula really intrigued me too and I'll let you know if it's any better with a different brush!
Deletethanks for the review! i`ve seen tons of displays for this recently. i need lots of volume from my mascaras too
ReplyDeleteI think I definitely would prefer volume over lengthening!
DeleteI 100% agree with your review..I picked up this mascara too after being interested in the hype..but I didn't find it revolutionary...I don't hate it but I wouldn't repurchase!
ReplyDeleteMe too, I'll just use up what I have and move on from Mega Plush :(
DeleteThanks for this review! My sister was interested in this mascara, so I'm definitely sharing your review with her. To bad it was a bit of a letdown.
ReplyDeleteYeah...it was a bit of a disappointment...oh well, onward to the next mascara!
DeleteI agree with your review. It's nothing special!....but it's not horrible. I got the waterproof version and it Holds a curl decently, has good separation (and no clumping), and Is easy to remove. I hate the bendy wand ( what the hell is the point of it? Lol) and it really doesn't give me much more than a basic, natural, everyday look. I'm hoping the formula might thicken up after a few weeks so that it will layer on a bit hacker...I like a dramatic lash all day, everyday! Lol
ReplyDeleteYeah, I don't get the bendy wand "technology" at all! I like more of a dramatic lash too so this mascara will be for my "doing the laundry" eyes ;-)
DeleteThanks for reviewing this. I'm terrible for buying every single mascara that comes out. :/ I'm never pleased. I've now learned to use 2 different mascaras at a time. First for lengthening and second for volume. I get good results this way. I have to wear waterproof as well..otherwise I get intense raccoon eyes. :/
ReplyDeleteI'll try your idea of using two mascaras because it's true, not all mascaras do the same thing!
DeleteI have been loving the Marcelle one too! I just started using it and it's fabulous!
ReplyDeleteI tried this stuff and I really like it! It works well for me!
ReplyDeleteOh, interesting! I'm glad it worked for someone else!!
Deletei found your review very helpful... i am alternating between revlon custom eyes with the alternating brush that you can spin for length & drama or length and volume... i love the wand but hate the formula it clumps and flakes all over my face... then i stated using maybeline lash stiletto which i like but it isn't "thick" enough... i'm seriously thinking of buying the mega plush and using the revlon alternating wand... I would love to see your review if you use another wand as well...
ReplyDeleteThat is really nice to hear that you enjoyed my review! I haven't tried this with another brush yet, but I'll post back here for you when I do?
DeleteThank you for the review! I just bought the Mega Plush mascara and I LOVE it!!! I'm definitely going to keep buying it...also going to stock up on it when it's on sale. It's good for me because I don't look good with dramatic mascara for some reason...maybe I have dark eyes or something, but I look awful if I wear too much makeup, even just mascara! But the Mega Plush is awesome for me...it is SOOO good for lash separation, looks like fake eyelashes! Keeps a curl, I have stick straight lashes, removes very easily, and lengthens a lot! Can't even feel that I'm wearing mascara, it's so light! Love it soooo much :)
ReplyDeleteYou probably have lashes that I would DIE to have! I find that I've been using it on casual days out when I don't want to look like I have too much makeup so I agree with you that's it good for that! I'm glad it's working out for you! I wish it did more for me, but that's ok.
DeleteI have just started using this mascara a few days ago. I love it. Now in all fairness, I do have long eyelashes and was looking for a mascara that was less "hard" when it dried as I have broken my eyelashes twice using other kinds. I also find the brush separates my lashes well. My problem is, I cant get it off! Not with water anyway. I cant use the oil based eye make-up removers, any ideas?
ReplyDeleteI was able to just use a remover like Bioderma Sensibio and off it came!
