SHEET MASKS | Lumeclat by Bioesque Biocellulose Masks #CanadaEh

It is that time of the week where I talk sheet masks again and though I know they aren't everyone's cup of tea, out of all the beauty products I have ever featured, sheet masks seem to be such an icebreaker! I don't know if it's because I've gone from "I should look glam and pretty" to "I'm wearing a sheet mask, wanna fight about it?", but I feel less embarrassed about being bare faced and more confident in showcasing my own skin. I feel like if I'm going to invest in my skin like this, you all should get a chance to see how it's doing right?

Sheet masks come in all price points and materials, but the real "investments" are when it comes to biocellulose masks! The good ones are usually more than $10 per mask and while I have enjoyed some good ones at a lower price point, there is nothing like a truly luxurious biocellulose mask like the Lumeclat ones from Vancouver-based company Bioesque!

I have talked about the science of biocellulose masks before when I reviewed the For Beloved Ones so I won't rehash all of the details, but in terms of luxury, the Lumeclat masks are the only ones I have tried that would even be comparable to the quality of the ones from For Beloved One. They are also 100% biodegradable and sustainably produced since bacteria won't be endangered anytime soon thanks to their high rate of replication!

Created by Angie Tsai, the Lumeclat biocellulose masks collection comes with two masks -  Absolute Radiance and Complete Rejuvenate and are made with a pure bacterial culture in single sheets instead of in laarge cubes using the bacterial fermentation of coconut water. Each mask is also enhanced with aloe extract, organic rose water and low molecular weight hyaluronic acid! The masks are thin at about 20nm wide (cotton masks are usually around 2000nm), but definitely aren't as thin as the ones from Repiel which I found thin enough to rip upon removal. There needs to be a balance!

The Absolute Radiance Biocellulose Mask focuses on dark spots, discolouration and promises a radiant and more luminous complexion upon removal. This was my favourite of the two and of ALL the biocellulose masks I have tried so far! My skin actually did look brighter into the next day and the way it felt was so soft and smooth without any tackiness that I would hands-down buy this mask on my own!

The Complete Rejuvenate Biocellulose Mask focuses on lifting, firming and plumping up skin to smooth away fine lines. I should note that neither of these masks contains dimethicone so any plumping or smoothing will be with ingredients that are authentic and not just be a mask on top of your skin. This mask also contains organic rose water and low molecular weight hyaluronic acid, BUT what makes the essence quite interesting is the inclusion of the ingredient SYN-HYCAN (indicated in bold in ingredients list below). SYN-HYCAN is a skin-conditioning agent that also has been shown to stimulate the body's own production of hyaluronic acid (Truth in Aging, July 2019)! It does sit right at the almost 50% mark of the ingredients list so I don't know what level of concentration is required to stimulate biological activity, but this was my first time seeing this ingredient, let alone in something like a sheet mask so I thought that was quite cool!

Biocellulose masks tend to be very hydrating because of the skin-like material so this mask was most certainly that and didn't have the tackiness to accompany it like a few of the other For Beloved One and Repiel ones I have tried. I'm sure with weekly use, the hydration levels of my skin would be maintained at an outrageous level so I hope that when I hit 50, I will still have access to a moisturizing mask like this one! I didn't get the same level of radiance as with the previous mask, but ideally I would alternate usage between the two.

Final verdict: Much of my comparison will be to For Beloved One as they were the first to really introduce the concept of biocellulose to the market. In terms of mask thickness, both brands stick to a thickness of around 20nm-50nm with similar perfect fit. Pricing per mask is about double for the Lumeclat masks compared to the ones from FBO which I know will hurt my wallet a little bit, but for the results of the Absolute Radiance mask alone, I would grab a pack of four because I enjoyed the experience and the results as I got the hydration plus the lit from within luminosity! I know this level of biocellulose is up there in price, but the quality compared to the $8 ones from Repiel are like night and day. These are an unbelievable treat and I enjoyed them thoroughly!
