HAIR | Oils for Shine, Hydration and Protection

I didn't understand who would ever need a hair oil until I became a blonde. Not only do hair oils make my hair look healthier, but it also helps protect it from heat styling and UV damage. They are almost like a liquid helmet and once I realized how necessary they were to my haircare routine, I went from high-maintenance to hair-maintenance achievement level SUPREME!

While I do have a soft spot for natural hair oils without silicones, I still use both types because silicones work instantly and when I am running out the door in the mornings before work, I just want shine and smoothness without the wait time. Let's start by saying that my hair is COARSE, thick and is the kind of hair that can weave its way into knit couches and hurt if flicked into the face so my hair can handle quite a bit of oil without looking weighed down. Needless to say, I should have looked into hair oils long before I started dying it, but hey "the more you know"!

Design.ME Gloss. ME Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil Hair Serum*

Hair Oils Review

The first hair oil/serum that I have been enjoying is Design.ME's Gloss.Me*! This contains the super hot ingredient - cannabis sativa oil seed oil which acts as a moisturizer as well as a combination of Vitamin A, C and E to improve overall hair health. This is a serum that contains silicones so the majority of the shine and smoothness will be due to these bigger molecule ingredients, but it's nice to have some skincare type ingredients as well. Like all Design.ME products, this hair serum has a fairly strong floral fragrance that I actually like, but I have had some readers tell me that they have found it too strong. Overall, this gives my hair smoothness and softness after curling without destroying the curls.

Shu Uemura Essence Absolue Nourishing Protective Oil*
Hair Oils Review

This hair oil from Shu Uemura is probably my most used because it is a heavy duty mofo! It is a thick oil that I only use a half pump of and in addition to camellia oil, this is an oil that contains ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate aka sunscreen for your hair! This ingredients absorbs UV radiation and has been my summer go-to when I know I am going to be outside a lot. If you have fine hair, I would use this very sparingly as a little goes a long way and too much can make hair look "wet".

Aveda Dry Remedy Daily Moisturizing Oil
Hair Oils Review

This oil is one of my favourite silicone-free oils because it's like aromatherapy for your hair! It smells so therapeutic and relaxing that I will reach for a couple of drops of this before bed and apply to the ends and mid-lengths of my hair. This oil is fairly lightweight and contains sunflower, buriti fruit and olive oil as its base. This is also great just for smoothing away flyaways and frizz on the TOP of my head without oiling up my roots.

Sisley Precious Hair Care Oil
Hair Oils Review

This is by far THE most expensive haircare product I have and I am glad that it's something that will last! I would NEVER spend this much on shampoo, but there is a luxury aspect to hair oil that makes my brain OK with spending over $100 on this! This is full of silicones, but not as thick as the Shu Uemura oil and can be used on both damp and dry hair. Yes, there is also shea, moringa and cotton seed oil that help with hair softness, but this hair oil is all about scent for me. The scent of this reminds of great herbal skincare and actually makes my head feel better if I have a headache. The first step of even USING this hair oil is NOT to put it on your hair, but to rub it between your hands and just INHALE. I freakin' love it.

Briogeo Rosarco Oil*
Hair Oils Review

I have done a full review on this hair oil here so I won't repeat myself too much, but this oil from Briogeo was my first experience with a non-silicone based hair oil and I was amazed at the difference in softness of my hair. After trying the Aveda one afterwards, I find these two somewhat comparable, but the Rosarco one to be slightly heavier in consistency so I tend to use this in a higher volume if my hair is feeling extra dry and I want to layer the oil on overnight! The Aveda one is more for daily maintenance. See, oils can get complicated LOL!

Playa Ritual Hair Oil*
Hair Oils Review

I have also reviewed this Playa hair oil here and it is also another really lovely silicone-free and coconut oil based hair oil. The scent of this is so beachy, but NOT like fake coconuts and is the least greasy oil out of the entire group. This super lightweight oil just goes right into my hair and is one that I use more when I am blonde because it was actually designed to be gentle and effective enough for sun and beach blonde California hair! My only gripe with this oil is the packaging as the dropper is so long, but the pump very short so only 1/10th of the dropper is filling up so I have to double or even triple dip! Other than that, this would be a great hair oil for fine hair or just for little frizz and flyaway touch-ups here and there.

Hair Oils Review

I hope you all enjoyed my hair oil favourites as I don't normally do round-up style posts, but I think the days of single product reviews are gone (although I secretly still love them). If you have some other hair oil suggestions, I would love to hear about them as I see that I am now a bit of a collector!
