I come from a time when boy bands were HUGE. I started with Boyz II Men with my teen years being filled with Backstreet Boys, *N SYNC, Westlife and Boyzone. Now it’s 15 years later and the next generation of boy bands have entered the scene in the form of the epically huge One Direction. I won’t lie, if Backstreet Boys came out with an “I Want It That Way” lipstick I would buy it in a heartbeat so One Direction fans everywhere can revel in Makeup by One Direction with products named after song titles and instructions to create makeup looks that I’m sure the boys of One Direction would approve of.
This limited edition Looks Collection comes in 3 collectible tins inspired by the albums “Take Me Home”, “Up All Night” and most recently “Midnight Memories”. Each tin comes with everything you will need to create a full makeup look that’s either fun, flirty or fashion forward.
The tutorials for 3 eye makeup looks are on the inside of the tin and indicate where to apply each product. I decided to try my hand at the top look as I saw a a brown eye which I took to mean, “for brown eyes”.
The Best Song Ever Lipstick is a creamy dark red that was smooth and applied nicely to the lips. It is very hard to see, but on the lipstick cap there is a faint brick print with the words “One Direction” on the side.
Through the Dark Liquilights Glow Gloss is a bright, glitter fuchsia lip gloss with a standard doe-foot applicator. Pigmentation and consistency were very opaque and creamy. I really liked this colour and think it would brighten up any makeup look.
The Little Black Dress Mascara is a standard black mascara with a fairly dry formula that worked for my little lashes. The formula did not do a lot for me in terms of volume or length, but from what I remember as a teenager I would never have been allowed to have anything more than very natural-looking lashes making this mascara perfect for school.
The Better Than Words pencil was smooth and I definitely did not experience any tugging on the skin, but it just wasn’t black enough as you can see from swatches below. It was almost too oily to have the pigmentation I look for in a black pencil. It is also intended to be used as a body pencil so I suppose it is black enough to write a message to Harry on your forehead or wherever else you would like him to look.
I both like and dislike this eyeshadow palette because the shadow quality was all over the map. Little White Lies was soft to the touch in the pan, but super crumbly once I started applying it to skin. The consistency was felt too soft as my brush almost made a hole in the pan.
Strong was somewhat streaky in application and I kept having to tap on more shadow to keep it looking as black as possible.
Midnight Memories is a shade I’d rather wipe from my memory as it is a cream shadow that was chunky to apply. However, it would be a good BASE for other eyeshadows.
Half a Heart and Don’t Forget Where You Belong were my favourite shadows just based on pigmentation and consistency. They were both very pretty colours and I love the inclusion of a rose gold shadow in this palette.
Right Now is a shimmery gold-concrete grey nail polish that was opaque in two coats. It applied beautifully with no issues whatsoever and is a great colour for Fall.
And finally the stencils that were included! I didn’t actually think I was going to work them into a makeup look, but I figured I’d go full One Direction groupie. The stencils are made of a thin white plastic that can be used with nail polish as well. I decided to use Strong with an eyeshadow brush to create my little diamond.
And here is the makeup look I created using the One Direction eyeshadow palette, mascara and lip gloss!
Final Verdict: The quality of the makeup collection was a bit of a mixed bag, but decent overall. I thought the nail polish had the perfect formulation and the lip gloss was a great shade and comfortable to wear. The eyeshadows could have been better formulated, but I found the colour palette to be quite fun. If I were a teenager, I would really love this makeup collection because let’s face it, it’s got One Direction on it and the theme of each product is super fan girl.
The Makeup by One Direction line will be available worldwide starting in the U.S.
