BATH & BODY | Giving Some ATTITUDE with the New Super Leaves Collection

Montreal-based brand ATTITUDE, first caught my eye when I was in the household cleaning aisle of London Drugs trying to find something to clean my bathroom that didn't give me a headache. The bathroom cleaners I was using had such noxious scents that I often felt like every breath I took killed off a few neurons or two. I noticed a citrus-scented bathroom cleaner by ATTITUDE and I was sold. To this day, my bathroom is cleaned with only non-neuron killing products so even though cleaning products excite me (because I'm old), I was like "yeahhhhh!" when I saw the new Super Leaves Collection at my local London Drugs.

I have spoken about ATTITUDE before in my green beauty bath post (here) and their stance on providing vegan, carcinogen-free personal and home care products. Yes, I think it's fantastic that brands are doing this, but as always, still do your own research and make that personal choice. I recently got into a heated debate with a cosmetic chemist who told me not to trust David Suzuki because his foundation wasn't "science-based" and that I had been fooled without even knowing it. Think what you want, but a geneticist should have some street cred. Some "chemicals" are just fine and have never been directly connected to cancer, but for those who wish to err on the side of caution, I understand. Just do as the ATTITUDE motto says and "Live Consciously".

Anyway, the Super Leaves collection centers on the fact that leaves go through quite a bit of environmental stress meaning that physiologically, leaves are built to endure a lot. Imagine having to protect yourself 24-7 from the sun, wind and rain? This collection uses extracts from the Watercress and Indian cress leaves that are rich in vitamins especially vitamin K and C (though I am more familiar with these being ingested as opposed to being applied topically). I've read that watercress works topically for eczema and acne, but I am a BIGGER fan of dipping my fries into watercress mayo...

ATTITUDE sent me a couple of products to try which ended up being a VERY heavy package to haul from the post office as it was like carrying a small child! Nevertheless, I was excited to get my hands dirty (and then wash them) with the Super Leaves Natural Hand Soap (473mL/$5.95 CDN). The Super Leaves Collection currently has four floral/fruity scents all of which smell quite pleasant and even hubby approves!  I received Lemon Leaves* and Orange Leaves* both of which smell lightly citrusy and with a more fluidic consistency. This hand soap did not product a huge lather, but did clean my hands just like any other hand soap and without leaving me to wash my hands in order to get rid of that slimy film that some creamier soaps can leave behind.

Ingredients: Aqua / water / eau, sodium coco-sulfate, sodium chloride, coco-glucoside, vegetable glycerin, decyl glucoside, glyceryl oleate, citric acid, nasturtium officinale (watercress / cresson) extract, tropaeolum magus (indian cress / capucine) extract, maltodextrin, moringa oleifera seed extract, citrus limon (lemon / citron) leaf extract, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, 3-hexenol (green leaves), methyldihydrojasmonate (jasmin), dimethyl heptenal (fruit).

I talked about the Super Leaves Natural Shower Gel in Soothing White Tea Leaves* (473mL/$9.95CDN) in my bath time post above and along with still producing a nice lather that psychologically makes us feel clean, white tea extract is an antioxidant that is intended to help with aging. I feel like because shower gels are just washed off, I never get too picky about whether they are anti-aging or not. As long as it smells good and gets me clean, I'm happy!

I REALLY liked the Super Leaves Natural Body Cream (240mL/$14.95 CDN) because of the rich, but non-greasy texture. I received the scent Olive Leaves* which I found to be more on the floral end of the scent spectrum, but the texture is really a dream! Anytime I see the word cream, I know it's going to be intensely hydrating, but I never really like the wait time for things to soak in even though I know my skin may need it. This cream just melts right in and I've even been sneaking it in as a hand cream because it doesn't make my keyboard greasy!

Ingredients (Shower Gel): Aqua/water/eau, coco-glucoside, sodium coco-sulfate, vegetable glycerin, sodium cocoyl isethionate, glyceryl oleate, lauryl glucoside, stearyl citrate, citric acid, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, nasturtium officinale (watercress / cresson) extract, tropaeolum magus (Indian cress / capucine) extract, maltodextrin, moringa oleifera seed extract, camellia sinensis (white tea / thé blanc) leaf extract, methyldihydrojasmonate (jasmine), hexyl salicylate (floral), pentadecalactone (fruit)

Ingredients (Body Cream): Aqua / water / eau, caprylic / capric triglyceride, vegetable glycerin, dicaprylyl ether, cetearyl olivate, olea europaea (olive) oil, vitis vinifera (grape) seed oil, butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter, sorbitan olivate, stearyl alcohol, octyldodecanol, tapioca starch, glyceryl stearate, xanthan gum, nasturtium officinale (watercress / cresson) extract, tropaeolum magus (Indian cress / capucine) extract, maltodextrin, moringa oleifera seed extract, olea europaea (olive) leaf extract, levulinic acid, potassium sorbate, sodium levulinate, hexyl salicylate (floral), geranyl acetate (floral), methyldihydrojasmonate (jasmine).

Ah, natural hair care. I still waffle on my thoughts with natural hair care if you're doing something "artificial" to hair in the first place (like making it blue). I feel like I always need so much MORE than what natural hair products can offer to give my hair what it needs to not look like I have a dying bird on top of my head.

The Super Leaves Natural Shampoo for Volume and Shine* (473mL/$9.95CDN) contains soy protein to thicken and cranberry which is an antioxidant. The scent of orange and cardamom is really nice and the shampoo has a decent lather. The matching Conditioner* (240ml/$9.95CDN) smells just as good and leaves hair feeling soft without any silicones! Though these are both safe for colour-treated hair, I still feel like I would need to compliment these products with some sort of colour-enhancing treatment or at least swap out one of them for a colour-enhancing shampoo or conditioner.

Ingredients of Shampoo: Aqua / water / eau, sodium coco-sulfate, coco-glucoside, vegetable glycerin, sodium cocoyl isethionate, citric acid, panthenol (vitamin B5), glyceryl oleate, sodium benzoate, inulin, potassium sorbate, nasturtium officinale (watercress / cresson) extract, tropaeolum magus (Indian cress / capucine) extract, maltodextrin, moringa oleifera seed extract, hydrolyzed soy protein, vaccinium macrocarpon (cranberry / canneberge) fruit extract, decanal (fruit), pentadecalactone (fruit), raspberry ketone.

Ingredients of Conditioner: Aqua / water / eau, vegetable glycerin, behentrimonium methosulfate, caprylic / capric triglyceride, cetearyl alcohol, dicaprylyl ether, glyceryl stearate, nasturtium officinale (watercress / cresson) extract, tropaeolum magus (Indian cress / capucine) extract, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, citric acid, maltodextrin, moringa oleifera seed extract, hydrolyzed soy protein, vaccinium macrocarpon (cranberry / canneberge) fruit extract, decanal (fruit), pentadecalactone (fruit), raspberry ketone.

These last two products are targeted at men, but of course can be used by anyone. I feel like gunmetal grey is the colour of most men's products, but at this point my husband is fine with pink and glitter!

The Super Leaves 2 in 1 Sport Natural Shampoo and Body Wash* (240mL/$9.95 CDN) contains ginseng and grapeseed oil to energize and wake you up. Though my husband found it "fine" as a shampoo and body wash, I found it to be VERY lathery! My puff was growing its own puff and a tiny bit grew into so much! I know some men like this 2 in 1 aspect, I personally like to keep the two separate but I suppose if you are at the gym, taking one bottle is easier than taking two.

The Super Leaves Natural Body Cream in Soothing Black Willow* (240mL/$14.95 CDN) has the same non-greasy, quick absorbing texture, but with a bonus of willow bark extract which is nature's source of salicylic acid! This body cream not only hydrates, but lightly exfoliates too! The scent is definitely more musky, but still sweetly floral.

Ingredients of 2 in 1 Sport: Aqua / water / eau, sodium coco-sulfate, coco-glucoside, vegetable glycerin, sodium cocoyl isethionate, citric acid, panthenol (vitamin B5), glyceryl oleate, sodium benzoate, inulin, potassium sorbate, nasturtium officinale (watercress / cresson) extract, tropaeolum magus (Indian cress / capucine) extract, maltodextrin, moringa oleifera seed extract, panax ginseng root extract, vitis vinifera (grape / raisin) seed oil, triethyl citrate, methyldihydrojasmonate (jasmine), linalyl acetate (floral).

Ingredients of Body Cream: Aqua / water / eau, vitis vinifera (grape) seed oil, vegetable glycerin, caprylic / capric triglyceride, cetearyl olivate, butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter, octyldodecanol, sorbitan olivate, tapioca starch, stearyl alcohol, glyceryl stearate, xanthan gum, nasturtium officinale (watercress / cresson) extract, tropaeolum magus (Indian cress / capucine) extract, maltodextrin, moringa oleifera seed extract, salix nigra (willow / saule) bark extract, levulinic acid, potassium sorbate, sodium levulinate, triethyl citrate, methyldihydrojasmonate (jasmin), ionone (floral).

Interestingly enough, I noticed that there is no phenoxyethanol in any of the ATTITUDE products I was sent. This is a preservative that has been recently introduced now that parabens are the devil, but some brands have started to eliminate this from their ingredients lists as it *may* have neurotoxin potential. I've always wondered what would become of this ingredient and I am actually curious to see if research will show anything conclusive.

Final verdict: Congratulations on making it to the end! I may have rambled a little bit about ingredients and controversy, but it all comes down to being aware. I am a scientist by training and I tend to focus more on whether ingredients are effective as opposed to harmful, so if a natural product is just as effective and doesn't cost an arm and a leg, I think that's great. I found all of the body products measured up to anything I had used in the past with the exception of the hair products. My hair needs help and though the duo worked fine for my husband, I prefer synthetics to give shine.

ATTITUDE products are incredibly affordable and can be found right in the drugstore as I hate having to go hunting in specialty stores for green products! Body cream and hand soap get a huge thumbs up from me so I hope some of you get a chance to try them!
