I love being curious about makeup products because the majority of the time, it's either the same products in different shades or textures or in new packaging. When I first started seeing photos of the Rouge Dior Double Rouge contour lipsticks I just didn't understand or know what to expect. The product blurb states that these limited edition beauties come in 8 shades and combine a matte finish outer ring with a metallic lipstick core that will give lips a subtle ombre look. This ombre look makes the lips appear more voluminous and sculpted. I have played around with Korean style ombre lips before and have dabbed a frosty eyeshadow in the middle of my lips maybe once, but to have a lipstick do it for me would be pretty cool!
By the time they started getting reviews, there were still some mixed opinions and when I finally found some time to try them out, I actually thought they were kind of cool!
Let's admire how pretty this double lipstick looks because once you use these, they don't look nearly quite as pretty which is a little sad. The first shade I have is my favourite in person and it is 590 Dressed to Kill* ($43.00 CDN) - a dark raspberry and rose gold shade. It just feels very Fall-appropriate and is a comfortable colour to wear.
999 Matte Metal* is the iconic Dior red with a rose gold center. This is also a pretty shade and can be worn any time of the year. Oddly enough, when I did my arm swatches, these two shades looked very different, but then when I wore them on my lips, they photographed very similarly.
You can see in the swatch, that the metallic core goes right down the middle and is indeed very subtle. This effect is even more subtle on the lips and after using both colours a few times for various looks, it helps to apply the lipstick in one swipe so that the metallic shade doesn't get "muddied" with the matte shade. Coverage is complete in one swipe, but I would go back in to touch up the corners or edges of my lips which in retrospect, would have been better to do with a lip brush.
After use, the metallic ombre core gets covered in the matte shade so even though you still get the metallic shade coming through, it doesn't look quite as intense as the very first time you use the product. I guess I could clean off the center with a cotton swab, but I think I'm far too lazy for that!

Final verdict: I think this version of Rouge Dior is very specific and though these are a fairly wearable metallic lipsticks, I prefer the regular Rouge Dior lipsticks. I'm not a huge metallics person and while I have zero complaints about the formula, I just don't see myself wearing the Double Rouge as often as I would the regular versions.
