Since 2003, Sulwhasoo has released a limited edition ShineClassic Powder Compact as well as a Multi-Powder Compact every holiday season. I made the mistake of scrolling through previous years and now I want them all! Last year's compact was especially beautiful. That's not to say that I didn't swoon at this year's design which uses "Ipsa", the traditional Korean art of gold or silver inlaying and creating patterns by inserting gold/silver threads into grooves on the metal's surface.
The ShineClassic Powder comes in a beautiful box with an ipsa-inspired design on the back of the box with the compact nestled squarely inside. This year's pattern features the White Deer, a traditional symbol of longevity and power, and looks even more stunning in person!
The box also a powder refill as well as a magnetic suede case in which to store the compact because God knows I won't be tossing this haphazardly into my purse! Lord, help me if I scuff one of the precious deer!
I was pleasantly surprised by the weight of the compact itself. For $220, this is very much an indulgence and I was scared that it was going to feel like a cheap piece of plastic. The whole case turned out to be metal and feels incredibly substantial.
To be honest, I wasn't even thinking about the quality of the powder and I haven't had the best of luck when comes to Korean powders, but this had an extremely fine milled consistency and was so light and smooth that my skin felt like I had been "kissed my powder fairies". I just use a few taps in areas where I normally get oily like my T-zone and chin because I am pretty much hoarding every gram of this even though I know I can get a refill!
Final verdict: I would never go out and tell someone to spend over $200 on a powder compact, but obviously this is a collector's piece and you will either love it or not see the point. When I first saw images of this in the Fall, I fell in love and knew I had to have it! I have become very enamored with Sulwhasoo over the last 3 years and though I haven't loved EVERYTHING, things like the First Care Activating Serum, their cushion foundations and now their ShineClassic Powders are big staples for me and if you have not had a chance to invest in their more holistic view to Korean skincare, I highly encourage you to do so!
I picked up my ShineClassic Powder Compact at Holt Renfrew.
