I know I don't need to sell anyone on YSL because their packaging and product quality have always been droolworthy and it was never one of those brands that I would "haul". Instead, I would force myself to narrow it down to one or two shades of whatever it is I was eyeing (often a lipstick) and treat myself. That's what the Rouge Volupte Rock'N Shine lipsticks would be like because at almost $50 each, I would only want to get shades that I know I would wear all the time!
What makes these guys special is a glitter core surrounded by a smooth, pigmented balmy colour that melts across the lips giving a sparkly finish. When I first saw the star glitter core, I wasn't sure if the glitter would be crunchy or gritty on my lips. Thankfully, I couldn't feel anything and even upon application, there was a slight texture to the product, but nothing unpleasant. Each lipstick also smells like mango which adds to the overall "juicy" vibe!
Packaging is hefty with the outside matching the inner lipstick bullet colour which is nice because then I'll know what the colour of the product is without having to take off the cap. With some lip products, I store them upside down just so I can see the name of the product or its colour through the clear plastic so having the colour readily available is nice.
I know I called these lipsticks in the title, but these are really more like pigmented lip balms. Texture is very smooth and delivered a lot more pigmented than I thought they would!
#10 Pink Bass
Pink Bass is easy to wear because it's this soft shade of pink that looks like a set of healthy lips. I can apply this with my eyes closed and not worry that I've gone horrifically outside of my lip line.
#8 Rock'N Red
#6 Orange Speaker
Both Rock'N Red and Orange Speaker turned out to be much bolder than I thought they would appear on the lips and because the formula is quite smooth, I did have to use a mirror to make sure colour was only going where it should. I would also make sure that product hasn't gone to my teeth as the formula is highly transferable.
Final verdict: Will you feel like you got your $50 worth? I think so just because the experience from the packaging to application feels smooth, smells nice and looks good. My lips actually did look kind of shiny and I found that the little pieces of glitter in the product didn't look gaudy and almost felt sophisticated like I'd just been "frosted with luxury". Is this a revolutionary product? Not really though I was pleased that this balmy formula delivered a punch of colour. The formula does transfer easily so if you want your lips to stay shiny, reapplication will be frequent, but if you just like the colour, even with eating there is a baseline level of pigmentation that stays behind. It's YSL so a big part of the decision comes down to the experience and I know a lot of us feel happy just seeing one of their lipsticks on a makeup counter so for me, these are a worthwhile treat to have one or two of.
You can find the YSL Rouge Volupte Rock'N Shine Lipsticks at www.sephora.com or any YSL counter.
