Who else is literally drowning in sunscreen at this time of the year?! While I am still on the search for a physical sunscreen that is light enough to make me feel like I am wearing a chemical one, I have been alternating between the two types depending on my mood. Sunscreen has always been that thing that I prefer having merged into another product like my primer, moisturizer or even setting spray!
The Deciem social media pages were abuzz with excitement when it was announced there would be a mineral sunscreen coming out under The Ordinary brand and when it finally came, I had to snap it up and give it a try!
In addition to the price, what makes this Mineral UV Filters SPF 30 with Antioxidants Sunscreen (what a very literal name for a product) attractive is the inclusion of a skincare element including Tasmanian Pepperberry, which aims to calm irritated or sensitive skin (I only remember this as a treatment for scurvy!) which is great for those with easily agitated skin like my husband's. Oh Lord, can the wrong sunscreen screw up his skin!
I always like to read reviews of new products to see if anything I have been experiencing is the norm or if I am just an anomaly and in the case of this sunscreen, I believe I am the anomaly. There were quite a number of negative reviews on the Deciem website with this sunscreen receiving an overall rating of 6.5/10 mainly due to what people referred to as the white, corpse-like cast and the heavier texture. You guys have seen what my natural skin tone looks like and I had no issues with my skin looking too pale or vampire-like once I applied the product to my skin. As for the texture, I honestly didn't find it that heavy at all. It was definitely much lighter than the Attitude Face Stick, but still a touch heavier than my current favourite Coola.
When it comes to ingredients, there is definitely a lot more going on in terms of sheer number of ingredients than in other sunscreens. In addition to the physical UV filters of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, there are a lot of ingredients generally found in serums or moisturizers like amino acids or sunflower oil which are a nice-to-have, but not something I would actively look for in a suncare product. There are also silicones in this product to give the texture a nicer glide which is fairly common in a number of mineral sunscreens and makeup primers so maybe it has also been HELPING my makeup to stay on longer!
The overall finish of the sunscreen felt near invisible on my skin and I have had no issues wearing it underneath foundation for the week I have been testing it out. My main concern with physical sunscreens is having my skin feel "weighed down" and then greasy at the end of the day because of the amount of crap I have slapped on it. I am curious to see what their Invisible formula is like because if it ends up feeling lighter than this, then I think my Coola has met its match because I would love to spend 1/4 of the price on my sunscreen!

Final verdict: I quite liked this sunscreen despite the negative reviews. I did not experience the same issues as others though I can understand where most of their concerns stem from. For a mineral sunscreen, I found this fairly comfortable to apply and wear underneath makeup, but would be curious to see what their future invisible formula feels like in comparison. Obviously, the price is great for 50mL so why not give this sunscreen a try?
