HAIR | pH Balanced Haircare with the RAINCRY Smooth Collection

I don't remember haircare (and skincare for that matter) focusing on product pH but it kind of makes sense seeing as how our bodies and certain processes operate best at a certain pH and that messing with it causes are bodies to retaliate. Created by Feisel Qureshi, RAINCRY hair products are pH balanced (4.5 - 5.5) to ensure that the cuticle is closed after each use as a closed cuticle means a decrease in moisture loss, split ends and breakage. In addition to being cruelty-free, the brand focuses on a blend of plant and science-based formulas (amen!) and are sulphate, phthalate and paraben-free. All of the formulas are also safe for colour-treated and keratin-treated hair and can be used as often or as little as you would like. These gentle, but effective formulas won't strip your hair or scalp and also smell like a delicious Persian bakery!

Scalp issues like dermatitis and oiliness can also be the results of using an improperly pH balanced hair product so I was curious to see whether RAINCRY would help with my occasionally itchy scalp. I have a feeling most of my discomfort stems from having hot showers (I just can't help it), but I have also found that my scalp gets itchier with each passing day I don't wash it probably from product and oil buildup. Either way, it sounded like my hair and scalp would benefit from using the products so I was given the Smooth Collection for dry, coarse and frizzy hair to try which features a Smoothing Shampoo, Nutritive Conditioner and Daily Hydrating Treatment.

Smoothing Shampoo*
RAINCRY pH Balanced Haircare Smooth Collection

The Smoothing Shampoo is a gentle, but effective "cleanser" which is supposed to leave hair feeling super smooth and soft. I don't normally include ingredients lists for haircare, but for RAINCRY, they pride themselves on an "ethnobotanical" formula which encompasses historical, medical and cultural use with a plant basis. What is nice to see nice ingredients like vitamin B5 and natural oils in the first half of the list. Even after using the shampoo, I could already feel an improvement in the texture of my hair.

Ingredients: Aqua/Water/Eau, Sodium Methyl-2 Sulfolaurate, Disodium 2-Sulfolaurate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (naturally derived), Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Glycol Stearate, D-Panthenol (B5), Emblica Officinalis (Amla) Fruit Extract, Simmondsia chinesis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Tocopherol (Vitamin E) Acetate, Cocas Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Cysteine Amino Acids, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Keratin Amino Acids, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Phenoxyethanol, Citric Acid, Polyquaternium 10, CI 19140, Fragrance/Parfum

Nutritive Conditioner*

The conditioner is really the finishing touch for reviewing any haircare collection and even before I looked at the ingredients list, my hair felt even smoother after rinsing this out and remained soft to the touch after blow-drying and styling and was tangle-free! I was expecting this conditioner to have dimethicone in it as this is the typical smoothing agent in conditioner and there wasn't any! Instead, there was amodimethicone which still a silicone, but is one that selectively attaches itself to damaged hair so if you are finding that your colour-treated hair no longer responds to dimethicones, amodimethicone could be your new best friend! Michelle from Lab Muffin does a fantastic explanation (as always!) of how this ingredient works, but her personal experience is word for word how my hair felt after using this conditioner.

I also usually use a hair mask whenever I wash my hair, so to test if this Smooth Collection was REALLY doing its job, I did NOT use a hair mask and my hair still had a very soft and smooth texture that was almost silky to the touch which I attribute mainly to the amodimethicone so yay for silicones again!

Ingredients: Aqua/Water/Eau, Behentrimonium Chloride (plant-derived cleansing/conditioning agent from field mustard), Amodimethicone, Centrimonium Chloride, Cetearyl Alcohol, Ceterath 20, Glycerine, Cysteine Amino Acids, Cystine Amino Acids, Sclerocarya Birrea (Marula) Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Tocopherol (Vitamin E) Acetate, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Keratin Amino Acids, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Phenoxyethanol, Tetra Sodium EDTA , CI 19140, Citric Acid, CI 15985, Fragrance/Parfum

Daily Hydrating Treatment*

What is nice about this cream treatment is that you can use it as often as you want and I have never noticed that my hair gets weighed down. At first when you apply the cream it looks like your hair is wet, but it dries fast (another nice property of amodimethicone) and then your hair looks normal again. You can also use this in wet hair. In terms of what kind of a difference this treatment makes, the focus is on keeping the ends of your hair hydrated and honestly, I don't see a huge one. With the conditioner, I already feel like my ends are soft and smooth so if anything this treatment is probably maintaining that feeling, but I did not notice a big difference when this was part of my haircare routine. Maybe I will try to use this treatment in conjunction with a shampoo and conditioner WITHOUT amodimethicone and see if I still get soft hair.

Final verdict: Not bad at all! This is the first haircare line I've tried in awhile that had some nice ingredients that also gave some nice and noticeable results! Pricing is on the more expensive side as this is a luxury/salon level haircare collection, but the use and personal discovery of this wonder ingredient of amodimethicone paired with plant-based ingredients has me impressed and interested in trying more products with this ingredient in them. I could do without the bulky cardboard packaging and would have preferred a smaller rectangle unicarton, but I will admit that it does make for an interesting look! All in all, really loved the the shampoo and conditioner and will be sad to move on to something else, but will come to this duo when my hair needs a restart!
