7 Virtues Vanilla Woods Review

Press samples

As a big Dragon's Den fan, I tend to bingewatch the episodes whenever they are available on Netflix and I am amazed at how many of the products I use that have appeared on the show! I use makeup brand Youthforia, the Scrub Daddy, Blume, Cheekbone Beauty, Elate Cosmetics and now 7 Virtues!

FRAGRANCE | CLEAN Reserve Whipped Cherry EDP

CLEAN Reserve Whipped Cherry
Sample provided by Butterly

For those of you who participate in Butterly campaigns, I know we are only supposed to post on our social media and then upload a review on the Butterly or brand website, but for some reason I really felt compelled to add on a blog post. Maybe I am feeling nostalgic about blogging this week since I have more time to myself or maybe it's because CLEAN was one of the first fragrances I had in my perfume collection. It's probably a combination of the two, but either way I felt like giving this 3mL rollerball sample some love.

SKINCARE | Getting to Know Malin + Goetz

Just when I thought Influenster had shunned me, I suddenly received this Malin + Goetz Voxbox a couple of weeks ago! The last Voxbox I qualified for was actually around this time last year at the height of the pandemic and since I was off work, I remember starting my reviews right away and taking down notes every day. The brainpower and energy I had used for my day job needed to go somewhere so if you ever need an intense single product review of Ole Henrikson's Banana Bright Vitamin C Serum, definitely check out my review! Though today's review isn't quite as intense, I hope to give you all a good idea of my first real skincare experience with New York-based brand Malin + Goetz because it was quite nice!

HAIR | Mugler Alien Beautifying Hair Mist

Fragrance is definitely one area of beauty that I do not feature a lot on the blog and it's not because of lack of love, but more so the lack of knowledge on how to even brooch the subject. Fragrance is more about storytelling than about ingredients. Yes, I can tell you about the notes, but that is literally one or two lines of information. The rest is purely emotional which let's face it, for those who know me, is not me. I am the typical stoic Asian when it comes to my emotions so trying to seduce someone with a story about how a fragrance makes you feel is not my strong suit.

Though today's product is not solely a fragrance, I will do my best to romance you all. We have all heard about Mugler Alien. This is one of the most iconic fragrances of the Mugler and really fragrance world and it was one of the first scents I was introduced to when I started by fragrance collection. Alien is a warm floral and has a unique blend of: Jasmine Sambac, Cashmeran Wood and Amber Gris and to this day is a scent that I have not smelled anywhere else. This scent can be strong for some and I have my moods for when I use it, but for days when I just want a hint of it I have been using the Mugler Alien Beautifying Hair Mist* ($50.00 CDN)!

FRAGRANCE | Kat Von D Saint + Sinner Voxbox #TheResurrectionIsReal

I still have incredibly mixed feelings about Kat Von D. I really liked Sandra Bullock and while we have no idea what may have been going on with her and Jesse James, I can't help but think of that drama when I think of KVD. When it comes to her makeup brand and what she has done in the world of cosmetics, I have to say I am impressed. She was one of the first brands that I tried that had edgier shades of lipsticks and eyeshadows and I truly believe that KVD remains heavily involved with her brand despite how massive it has gotten.

While I have never been a die hard fan of KVD, her Tattoo Liner in Trooper is something I always use and have in my collection simply because it just IS one of the best liquid liners on the market. If this were ever discontinued, I would probably be just as crazed as the fans who 8 years ago were devastated when Saint and Sinner fragrances were discontinued. Both of these scents have been brought back to life this summer with the ONLY change being completely revamped gothic-inspired bottles.

BATH & BODY | Valentine's Date Night Out with Avon's Little Red Dress and So Very Sofia Collections

It's that time of year where being single on Valentine's Day seems to be the worst thing in the world, but honestly, it's just a day of LOVE. Whether it's about showing others or yourself some love, that is the overall message I take from Valentine's Day so whether you are single or in a couple, it's all good! Even though I have been with my husband for just over 11 years now, I still enjoy looking and smelling extra feminine and girly on this day though my husband says I look pretty no matter the day (GOOD ANSWER). This year I am enlisting some help from Avon to get me into the Valentine's Day spirit!

FRAGRANCE | Demeter Foolproof Blending Kit #CBBCustomBlend

Earlier this year, Demeter and the CBB got together to make us all master perfumers (here) with the Demeter Foolproof Blending Kits ($45.00 USD). We all had so much fun that we have partnered up again for each of us to create our own custom scents from blending to designing our own bottle label (Yes, there may have been craft time involved!).

What I have always loved about Demeter's scents when I first started using them as a teenager was how EASY it was to wear just about ANY scent. From Birthday Cake to Dirt, it all seemed to work and was never too much or worse, too artificial. If anything, Demeter always had this uncanny ability to replicate every dimension of even the most uncapturable fragrances. When it came to choose my scents for this experiment in parfumerie, I decided to go with two scents that I love in real life: "Wet Garden"* and "Salt Air"* and one where I had no idea what to expect - "Gin & Tonic"*. There are duo and trio blending kits available should you want a little bit of direction instead of trying to decide from Demeter's extensive 300+ fragrance library!

FRAGRANCE | Demeter Foolproof Blending - Getting it Right Everytime! #CBBFOOLPROOFBLEND

I love fragrance and have always been fascinated by the mysterious art of perfuming. How do you even get into that line of work?  It all seems so complicated and even when I smell my favourite scents and read what their notes are, I can't even imagine knowing that those notes would go well together. What makes a good base, middle or top note?

Once again the folks at Demeter have made fragrance fun, approachable and personal. Demeter is known for their many, many singular note fragrances in comfortable scents of vanilla to rain to crazy zombie (for real). I mean, they aren't called the Demeter Fragrance LIBRARY for nothing! This year, Demeter is giving us the gift of becoming our own perfumer with the release of Foolproof Blending Trios and Duos that allow for the creation of a unique scent to call your own.

FRAGRANCE | Avon Ultra Sexy Heart EDT Spray Review

I honestly thought I would be only posting about nails the week leading up to Valentine's Day, but something caught my eye - I mean, nose a few days ago. Avon's Ultra Sexy Heart* ($26.00 CDN) is a floral gourmand and is described as being "scented like gifts of love, maraschino cherries, irresistible red rose petals and decadent chocolate marshmallow". What sounds like an overwhelmingly sweet scent was totally not the case for me as there was a slight bite within the sweetness. With my limited amateur olfactory abilities, I couldn't even tell you which of the components is providing that "kick", but I know that I like it!

Housed in a sweet little glass bottle, t
he bite wears off a little bit and I am left with what I would think of as a marshmallow scent after a few minutes. Unfortunately it does not last all work day, but more like 4 hours which is not a surprise for an EDT like this one. Nevertheless, this is the scent I have been wearing the last few days "in honor" of Valentine's Day and I hope you get a chance to enjoy it too!

And if you're wondering where to get this adorable Hershey's Kiss pendant*, it is currently on sale at www.avon.ca now! Ultra Sexy Heart EDT Spray is available from your local Avon representative or www.avon.ca

FRAGRANCE | My Burberry EDT Review

Holy moly was I sick this week! This is the first time I have even ventured onto the computer since falling ill with a fever of 39°C over the weekend. I don't get the flu very often, but I was DONE up until a few days ago when I started feeling well enough to even start thinking beauty again. I did miss you all while I was gone and thought I would ease my way back with a review that should have happened a long time ago.

Though this is not a new fragrance, My Burberry EDT*(90mL/$80.00 CDN) is a lighter, fresher version of My Burberry EDP. Created by CEO and CCO of Burberry, Christopher Bailey and world-renowned perfumer Francis Kurkdijian, My Burberry EDT is brighter, happier and a scent that I found suited me more on a day-to-day basis.

FRAGRANCE | SO…? COUTURE ft. SO…? PARIS, SO…? LONDON, SO…? NYC & SO…? RIO EDT

If you love fragrances, whether it'd be for the bottles or for the scent, you can understand how hard it is to choose JUST ONE sometimes especially when there is a collection to be had! What I love about So...Fragrance? is that you can indeed have them all because of how incredibly affordable the fragrances are. I found a few favourites in my previous reviews, but with the release of the new So...? Couture range I may have to make room amongst my 80 displayed fragrance bottles for: So...Paris?* (50mL/$9.99 CDN each)So...London?*So...NYC?* and So...Rio?*

BATH & BODY | Experience Fall with Mary Kay's Limited Edition Cityscape Collection

This Fall, Mary Kay released a number of limited edition bath and body products that not only looked chic and cool to display in my shower and dresser, but was totally up my alley in terms of scent. The fragrances this season were inspired by the Phantomia Orchid which I can only assume is incredibly sophisticated and elegant. Yes, a flower can be all that!

FRAGRANCE | Memories of Orange Creamsicle with the Demeter Fragrance Library #CBBScentMemory

Last year, the CBB and the Demeter Fragrance Library made some beautiful music together with the Christmas Scent Memory collaboration (read all about my memory here) so you can imagine how excited we all were to work together once more. It isn't often that a beauty product allows you to do some introspection (I mean, when was the last time your eyeliner made you think about your relationship with your mother?). Ever since my first experience with Demeter fragrances, I sit on the edge of my seat wondering what they'll think of next! This year's scents brought me back to childhood as well as allowed me to make new "scent memories" by layering some scent memories from Demeter's own CEO!

FRAGRANCE | mark. Buenos Aires Vibe EDT Spray

I know people have their signature fragrances, but there are definitely a few fragrances that I find far too heavy to wear in the summer. With the heat wave in Vancouver right now (35°C this weekend!), every scent becomes more intense so I prefer to wear a lighter scent that doesn’t evolve into something overwhelming and uncomfortable. I have been around others who probably SHOULD have made a seasonal fragrance change and did not. This is especially evident for those of us who take public transit all year…

The summer season always makes me want to go light and fruity, but now that I’m in my mid-30s, I have to be careful about finding the right balance and not smelling too young. The Buenos Aires Vibe EDT Spray* ($24.00 CDN) by mark is a blend of wild passion fruit, mauve violet and musk and is actually incredibly light considering the description of notes.

mark by Avon Buenos Aires Vibe Fragrance Review (2)
Since mark is targeted towards a younger audience (Lucy Hale of PLL fame is their ambassador), the bottle is fun-coloured and immediately stands out in my sea of seemingly meh-looking fragrance bottles. All I can smell is passion fruit from the get-go with a hint of floral, but the scent didn’t last very long on me though as it was barely noticeable on my skin after 2-3 hours. While this can be a good quality to have in a summer fragrance, those that prefer a longer wear-time may find “having to top up” a little annoying.

What is your go-to summer scent?

FRAGRANCE | Azzaro Pour Elle EDP Review

I have always been notoriously bad at reviewing fragrances because I have never been one for romancing a scent, but based on my dresser of EIGHTY different bottles of fragrance, I obviously enjoy it! Azzaro Pour Elle* (50mL/$70.00 or 75mL/$88.00) is described as seductive, sensual and sophisticated with its floral woody amber signature scent.

A fragrance must always enhance your seductive power. When you wear it, it is important that your partner wants to inhale your scent, touch you, be close to you…”  - Loris Azzaro

FRAGRANCE | L’Occitane Pivoine Flora EDT

In anticipation of the, soon to be released, Pivoine Sublime perfecting skincare line, L’Occitane has re-released the Pivoine Flora EDT ($55.00 CDN/75mL)* in a new, pink rounded bottle with softly engraved petals. I love this packaging so much more with its soft gradient and bright pink box. As for the scent, this must be a sign of the times as I swore I was not a floral gal and have had samples of Pivoine Flora before with no olfactory success. I spritzed this on my wrists the moment I got it and it wore beautifully. The peony (extracted from the south of France) is light, floral and incredibly fresh-smelling which is what pulled me in right away. I am immediately transported to open fields of flowers in France, despite never having been there! I suppose that’s part of the appeal of fragrance – being able to experience another country and culture all in one bottle.

VALENTINE’S DAY | So…Fragrance? Gift Sets with So…? Sexy, So…? Sinful and So…? Kiss Me

Having worked in the luxury jewellery industry for a decade, Valentine’s Day was the push to get back in the game after a quiet January. It’s a “holiday” that can be great when you’re in a couple or bring out some resentment if you’re single. I’ve never really minded either way because I love pink and red at all times and this is the one time of the year where I can really indulge. I used to buy foam hearts and decorate my binders in school and of course send out candy grams to friends because I love them too! Valentine’s Day was also the first time I took the opportunity to buy MYSELF a diamond ring because I wanted my first diamond to be all my own and not be tinged with emotion if there was ever a break-up (Isn’t break-up jewellery the worst?).

Speaking of red and pink, I have reviewed So…? Sinful before (here) and although I found the scent a bit too “young”, I found the packaging cute and price point to be incredibly affordable for the quality. Fragrance is very personal so if So…? Sinful didn’t quite work then maybe So…? Sexy or So…? Kiss Me? First up, is the So…? Sexy Cute Mix*($5.99 CDN) gift set that has mini versions of the eau de toilette and matching body lotion.

DEMETER HOLIDAY COLLECTION| Scent Memory with Candy Cane Truffle Cologne Spray

Demeter Candy Cane Truffle

I haven’t talked about Demeter fragrances in awhile (review) mainly because I bought so much the first time I purchased that I am, unsurprisingly, STILL working through them all!

Demeter has an uncanny ability to capture so much more than scent. Fragrance is all about capturing an emotion, feeling or memory. This month, as our featured brand, the CBB and a few other bloggers from the network aren’t just reviewing Demeter holiday fragrances. We’re sharing a scent memory: partly beauty and partly personal so you can get to know us a little better and truly understand what each fragrance embodies.

The scent of Candy Cane Truffle* is peppermint at first and then chocolate at the end. I don’t know how Demeter was able to do it, but I guess that’s why I am reviewing instead of creating! I was scared that I would smell like toothpaste or a mint, but the “truffle” part truly makes this a wearable scent.

I grew up in a Christian household so Christmas was always celebrated, but being overseas Chinese meant that we had our own take on Christmas traditions. For instance, I’ve always known that there was no Santa so I always knew to go straight to the source (my parents) to let them know what I wanted for Christmas!

Candy Cane Truffle doesn’t take me back to my childhood though. It takes me back to 10 years ago when I was a university student because the presence of candy canes meant the end of December exams! When it came to decorating the tree, it was never done until my exams were over because it was a “job” that I hoarded all to myself! Once my last exam was written, I would go out, purchase a box of fresh candy canes from London Drugs and spend the day decorating the tree in my PJs. Smelling Candy Cane Truffle takes me back to this stress-free period of my life where exams were really the only thing to worry about, my family was still intact and life felt lighter. I’m not saying life isn’t great now, but there were definitely fewer things to worry about then. To this day, I love peppermint-scented ANYTHING because of the comfort of this particular memory.

What is your scent memory?
