Sothys Paris | Siberian Ginseng Energizing Day and Night Cream

Talk about fancy packaging. When it comes to presentation, Sothys Paris pulls out all the stops. Today I have a new skincare release from Sothys that incorporates Siberian Ginseng into its Energizing Day and Night Creams ($119.00 each!). Siberian Ginseng is a small shrub that contains chemicals meant to supply “energy to reveal glowing youthful skin”. My scientist ears perk up when I see stuff like this and a part of me feels like I could just as easily turn it off that niggle in my brain and review this without addressing claims, but the more I read the literature that came with this skincare set, the more research I needed to do for myself. So, let’s find out all about Siberian Ginseng shall we?

Eleutherococcus senticosus or Siberian Ginseng is a small woody shrub native to Northeastern Asia and has been long used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat people with bone marrow suppression caused by chemotherapy or radiation, angina, hypercholesterolemia, and neurasthenia with headache, insomnia, and poor appetite (Wikipedia, May 2014). Siberian Ginseng also has similar herbal properties to those of traditional ginseng.

What makes Siberian Ginseng different than the conventional ginseng we normally think of is that it is an adaptogen with adaptogenic properties. I read that in the info pamphlet Sothys PR sent and I thought it was a made up “beauty word” until I saw it in a number of scientific journals. Essentially what this means is that Siberian Ginseng has the ability to stabilize certain physiological processes to promote homeostasis which is a fancy way of saying keeping your body’s internal workings regulated and happy including cell sensitivity to stress.

Day Cream

The objective of the day cream is to “reveal the skin’s youthfulness by restoring its luminosity and radiance”. The first I noticed right away with both creams is the fragrance. It’s very rich and has that “soapy” scent to it that in my mind I automatically associate with face creams. Siberian Ginseng is meant to protect the skin from environmental stressors throughout the day. I found the texture to be quite rich and found that I could not use it in the mornings when I needed to head out to work fairly quickly as this day cream took too long to absorb. It is ridiculously hydrating and if you told me this was a night cream, I probably would have believed you!

Night Cream

The objective of the day cream is to “renew the appearance of the skin during the night with features looking energized and have skin looking more luminous in the morning”. My skin is fairly well-behaved so it takes a really bad skin week for me to notice a difference like this so yes my skin looked good, but did it look any better than before? I honestly couldn’t tell you. Maybe if I go to sleep at a decent hour then I’m sure I’d see some significant results!

Final Verdict: For such a hefty price tag, I don’t think I’d ever buy it or recommend this as a must-have moisturizer duo just because I didn’t see a significant difference in my skin. I do take care of it religiously and I might feel differently in 10 years when time, children and life will have added more “stress” to my skin. Aside from the price, Siberian Ginseng has been shown in vitro to be effective against inflammation and fatigue so it does sound like a promising ingredient to be putting on my skin. Both creams were also very thick and hydrating so if you have dry skin, you would enjoy both creams. Both are good products and seem promising and while I certainly enjoyed applying such luxury to my face, I just can’t justify the price at this point in my life!
